CHARLESTON (UPI) -Parkersburg’s hurdle artistFred Kanney paced the Big Reds to their first West Virginia High School Track championship in 33 years here Saturday.The Big Reds scored 49 points to defeat defending state champion Charleston, which ended with 39 in the Triple-A division.The Mountain Lions lookedlike repeaters with just t w o events to go. one of them the 180-yard low hurdles, but Kanney produced a first place with teammate Phil Parsons comingin fourth.This gave the Big Reds eight points to put them ahead of Charleston 46-39.Charleston was disqualified in the other event, the mile relay, because one boy competing was in his fourth running event, where three only are allowed. The Mountain Lions were assured second place behind Berkley had it not been for the disqualification.Mount Hope won the small school division with 48 1-2 points, followed in second place by another Fayette County school. Fayetteville, with 31 1-2.Huntington East, another top contender for the Triple-A state crown, was third with 22 points, followed by Beckley 21. Huntington 20, Dupont 19. Stonewall Jackson 13.
