CLETUS ELWOOD (BOOTS) POFFENBERGERDROPPED by Detroit and Brooklyn, Cletus Elwood (Boots) Poffenberger declared, when he joined the Nashville Vols of the Southern Association this spring, that he would win his way back to the top—he’d start right off with four victories, he said. Well, he did win four games before tasting defeat, and associates and fans alike are beginning to believe he might make good his promises to forget about the bright lights and collect to the full on the ability he has shown. Boss Larry Gilbert of Nashville is reported to have paid S5.000 for Poffenberger; now employer and employe are of the opinion that there’ll be a deal in the fall, maybe, which will see $25,000 or $30,000 dropping into the Nashville cash box and a former Peck’s Bad Boy making his way back to the majors to stick.
