DuBois Area snappedi'unxsutawney's long hold on theDistrict IX AAA Track and Fieldchampionship yesterday afternoonby a 73 69 count.The meet was the closest in yearswith only 9 1 points separating DuBois and third place Clearfield. For a while it looked like it would come down to a repeat finish of the Big 3 meet where the 1600 meter relay decided the outcome between the same three teams.This time it wasn't necessary. Kevin Snell took first place in the 3200 meter run and Jim SherwoodCard Girls Avengeefeat/Boys Fall To St. Marysov George Ross C-E Sports Writer City Park The Central Christians Girls avenged their only loss of the season by beating the St MarysLady Dutch 8-5.The Dutchettes looked like they were on t heir way to another win as one Card after another was dealt an out in the early going. The first score of the game came as Dut-chette Beth Lewis walked and moved to Second on Sally Lenze’s single. Breindel walked to load the bases and both Lewis and Lenze scored on a error committed by Barb Fitzpatrick. The Card got out of the inning as Weis popped to Kari Jo Michael. The Dutchettes would score again in the fifth inning as Herzing walked, stole second and then scored as Michelle Felix tried to catch a fly ball to right field with one hand. The ball bounced out of the web of the glove and Herzing came home. The throw to Michael at the plate was wide and late and Seelye who hit the fly walked into second on the throw. Seelye came home on Nystroms RBI single. The last Dutch run came on a balk as Herzing, at bat,stepped out of the batter's box after Brenda Haney had started her pitching motion. Brenda tried to stop the throw and base Ump Joe Pisoni called 'balk'.Of the five St. Marys runs, only one was batted in; all others were gifts. But in the gifts depart ment St Marys pitcher Jeanie Seelye was the big giver.The Cards scored in only two innings, the third and seventh. The first Card run came in the third as Michael walked, stole second and third and came in on a Barb Fitzpatrick sacrifice.The seventh inning rally was a parade of walks and Dutch errors. That put the Beavers ahead by a slim half point going into the 3200 relay.But, Punxsutawney had failed to meet the qualifying time for the event and did not have a team. Although Clearfield beat DuBois for first, the Beavers already had the rfieet clinched.It was a long season, said Beaver head coach Herm Wertz looking back on the 5 7 regularseason with a third place finish inthe Big 3, we took our lumps. We had a team meeting before the season last February and they decided that they wanted to winDistricts even though I told them they would lose during the regular season. They never complained and always worked hard.”“All of them did their best today, he continued, “Sherwood inthe 3200, Brian Bailey had his besttriple jump of the year before he was hurt, Brian Brubaker had his best triple jump and pole vault.“Foltz and Bailey were hurt coming into the meet,” Wertz related, we have several others not at full strength. We knew Punxsutawney was the team to beat and if things had gone their way they would have won.”But, things failed to fall into place for the Chucks. Mark Kellar of the Chucks, who finished 6th in the state last year in the pole vault, scratched and failed to take a place. Tom Tersine, another fine Chuck vaulter, who had struggled all year, won the event but with John Licatovich and Brubaker taking second and third the Beavers had some unexpected extra points.Brian Bailey got his best triple and long jumps of the year to take a third and fourth. He injured his knee when he slipped on the board during the triple jump in the brief shower that struck the meet. That prevented him from having a third jump.Dwayne Shakespeare also played a major role in the Beaver victory.He won both the 100 and 400 meterand took a second in the 200 losing in the lean to Conway of Clearfield while being part of the second place 1600 meter relay team. He will go to states in four events.Alex Murone, one of the few holdovers from last year’s team, took the other Beaver first in the300 hurdles. He was also in the 1600relay. Others that will be making the trip to Shippensburg next weekend are: Fid Hand withseconds in the 400 and 1600 relay, Russ Dixon in the discus and Darrell Groves as the last part of the 1600 relay.Clearfield had the only triplewinners in the smoothly run meetwith Bill Conway winning the 200 and being part of the 1600 and 400 relays and Joe Whitaker winning the 800, 1600 and being part of the 1600 meter relay. The Bisons had a total of five first places.Punxsy had a quintet of firstswhile St. Marys, who finished fourth with 47 */* points, had two firsts and the fifth place Bradford Owls with 29 points had the other first place. No new District IX records were established in themeet.It has been a great season for me,” concluded Wertz as he watched his team take a victory lap around the Chucks' track. He will take seven members of his team with him next Friday and Saturday to Shippensburg State College for the RIAA championships.by Rantley MyersC-E Sports WriterPunxsutawney The old saying has the “winners celebrating and the losers making excuses or alibies but such was not the case in the narrow one point defeat by the DuBois Area High girls' track team in Districts.Desire had a lot to do with it, said DAHS Lady Beaver coach Sam Richards in going over the final results that saw Bradford edging his team 73 to 72. We missed points in many events that we may have had. In a meet like this you have to go for the team points. WE had some bad times, missed a couple of opportunities and some of the girls lost their desire or con fidence, Coach Richards com mented.DuBois Area did come out of the meet with seven first place showings and a pair of seconds to six firkts for the Lady Owls and also a pair of 2nds.But, Amy Kline and Sheila Wray accounted for six of those DAHS first places themselves as Amyoutsprinted the field in the 100meter hurdles, the 200 and 400meter dashes and Sheila took the other three individual runs of 800,1600 and 3200 meters. Their try for four blue ribbons failed in the final event of the day the 1600 meter relay which kept the Lady Owls in first place as DAHS needed to win this raceJane Licatovich was the only other DAHS gals' winner as she nipped teammate Terri F’ox in the Triple Jump for top honors.DAHS Falls ShortBehind all day in the team scoring, DAHS had a chance to win its third District IX meet in threeyears if they could win the 1600 meter relay or at least get more than two points better than Bradford.A new DAHS girls’ school record wasn’t enough for the quartet of Nancy Nichol, Sheila Wray, Gail Hicks and Amy Kline as St. Marys’ Dutch held off a desperate last-leg charge by Amy Kline to win the event with Bradford in third place. The St. Marys' win also knocked off six seconds from the old Dist. IX meet record of 4:15.8. The Lady Beavers ran the 1600 meters in just over 4:10 to best the mark set by the same foursome last year.Bradford’s star performer in the field events, Bobbi Jo Austin, wasnamed the meet's top athlete as she set new District IX marks in the Shot and Discus and took the javelin toss as well. With six points for first place, four for 2nd, three for 3rd, two for 1th and one for 5th. Bobbi Jo had 18 of the Lady Owls' 40 points in the field to only 20 for the Lady Beavers.DuBois Area cut into the big deficit with a 52 33 margin over theOwls in the running game. The Owls were shutout in only the 1600meter run all day while DAHS failed to get a point in the Discus, High Jump or the 400 meter relay.Other winnersBesides the seven firsts forDAHS and three for Bobbi Jo Austin of Bradford, the I^ady Owls won the 400 and 3200 meter relays and the 100 meter dash with Donna Kaber barely ahead of Punxsy's Kathy Stein who was second for the second straight year in the 100 dash. St. Marys won the 1600 meter relay and the Long Jump by Carolyn Quinn and Clearfield's Joan Natoli won the other event of the day, the high jump. Punxsy failed to get a first place in the 16 events.DAHS best showings were in the Triple Jump with 12 team points and in the 1600 meter run with 11 more. Lady Beavers contributing points for the runnerup spot were Jacque Fox in the 100 and 200 meter dashes, Lisa Cataldi and Jill Clever in the distance runs. Dawn Brubaker in the long and triple jumps, Sue MeCully in the javelin, and the 3200 meter relay team in addition to those already men tioned.Team ScoringClearfield was back in third place with only 41 points but that was oneTRIPLE WINNER. Sheila WraySoftball Games Beat The ElementsB P B DuBrookDuBrook evened their record for the season at 11 by defeating Burke Parsons Bowlby 19 9. Don Stoey went 5 for 5 with a home run to lead the winners while Steve Swope had two doubles and a single and Jeff Meighen a pair of singles. Winning pitcher Doug McMillen added a homer while C. Strouse had a triple and K. Brubaker and R. Carlson doubles.J. Whitmore had 3 hits for B. P. B. D. Kuntz, G. Rishel and B. Lairdtriple and McKinley a double.J. Hart had 3 singles for Gasbarre with B. Waddell adding a double and single and R. Lucas a pair of doubles. Bernie Kostic took the loss.Ilallstrom’s-Ivee SimpsonHallstrom’s opened defense of their league title by pounding on Lee Simpson 24-0. The winners blasted out 30 hits including 6 by Louie Zuccolotto including a double, a double in 5 hits by Butch Guthridge, a pair of doubles amongslugged two homers and a single as did Gary Brubaker. Joe Jewell,George Kriner and Buckv Dixon each had two doubles. Kriner and Dixon also had singles. Jake Short added a triple among three hits, Don Jewell tripled and Gary F'osterdoubled.Dave Sylvis had a triple andsingle for Rockwell. Alan Hornadded a triple and Joe Hoskavich took the loss.more than St. Marys in 4th whi the host Chucks had 27.
