^PORTS— from the —▼VlNGS[By “Bud”[To some of you who, like our* lelf, may have been misinformed, according to Doan, concerning the alleged “walk-out' of Ray L. Doan’s House of David baseball team on the Muscatine Muskies here Sunday afternoon, we pass m the following explanation of the matter penned by Doan himself.Dear Bud;‘•Noticed your article in The Journal tonight regarding ni€ running out on the local club. You no doubt were misinformed ©f the facts by some party.“The truth of the matter was, John Downey and I talked over the mater of playing a game here May 13. While we were talking some of the players* of the local club entered into the conversation regarding terms and Prices of admission, and as we could not agree, I told Downey I would see him after 1 returned frqm Chicago,“In the meantime I received a wire from the St. Louis Cardinals asking if 1 could send one of my clubs to Springfield on May 13 to play their farm club there. As I happen to he on the pay roll of the Cardinals as a scout 1 naturally wanted to play the game as it would make us more money.So I told Downey that 1 would pia\ him a week-day game and give him all of the receipts to make up for any loss that he mjght have had Sunday as he would have had to give us a split of the Sunday receipts.“As I am bringing about 30 players to Muscatine for training at a considerable expense I naturally' have to take advantage of all the good gates 1 can get in order to meet the heavy expense. My western club played to a $639.85 gate at Des Moines, Sunday, and my eastern club would ha\e done equally as well at Springfield if it hadn't rained us out.•‘When Davenport played here the Muskies had a $140 crowd which meant my share here last Sunday would have been $50 or $60. Downey and 1 understood perfectly about the game. The only squawking 1 know of was done by two or three- players.** Yours truly,fiay L. Doan.
