May 11, 1987Page ThirteenDistrict IX, AAA Track Field MeetPunxsy upsets Bradford boysKessler wins twice for Lady BeaversBy BANTLEY MYERSPUNXSUTAWANEY - Domin-cia Applegate was the only fourtime winner in the District IX, Class AAA Track and Field meet yesterday and the Lady Owl not only led Bradford to the girls1 team title but she was named the outstanding performer in themeet. The Lady Owls now have won five straight District team trophies.DuBois Area High’s Lady Beavers finished third in the team race behind Punxsutawney with St. Marys nudging out Clearfield for fourth.The Bradford boys three-year reign as District champs came to an end as Punxsutawney won the team title and DuBois Area High’s Beaver boys took second place a point and a half ahead of the Owls. Clearfield was fourth and St. Marys fifth in the team race.No new district records were established under ideal weather conditions. Rod Shaffer of Punxsy missed by one inch of tying the pole vault mark of 14-feet set by DAHS’s Mike Watson in 1980.GIRLS RESULTSAmy Kessler took two events for DAHS and she was the only winner for coach Sam Richards’ Lady Beaver squad. Amy won the shot and javelin events and lost in a jump-off for the high jump first place award. The talented DAHS junior was third in the discus.Kessler was second in the shot as a freshman two years ago and didn’t compete in track last season. Her winning throw in yesterday was 36-8. Clearfieidjavelin tosses for the District meet as she knocked off top rankedBrandie Karhoff and Daly Ann Fuller of Bradford. Kessler’s best throw was her last which went129-3, a good 15-feet better than her qualifying toss. Kessler had the top qualifying discus throw of just over 100 feet but couldn’t do better than third yesterday with a 99 11 throw.DAHS had a good shot at winn ing the final event of the day, the 1600 meter relay, but the foursome of Denise and Debbie Overholser, Heather Baumgratz and Michelene Ferko were nipped in the final meters by Bradford which won all three relay races.Bradford’s Domincia Applegate showed her strength with a good anchor leg in the 1600 relay to overtake the Lady Beavers, and, she also was a main force in the 400 relay. Earlier she won the 100 meter race by edging out Punxsy'sVal Filler, and, in the 200, Michelene Ferko of DAHS was in there for first place all the way before Applegate broke the tape.Jessica Rairie placed in both hurdle races for the Lady Beavers. Wendy Orsich placed in the long and triple jumps, Gwen King took a second in the 3200 meter run, Denise Overholser placed in the 400 dash and along with twin sister Debbie was on the 400 and 1600 DAHS relay teams which did well.The Lady Beavers were five points better than a year ago but had only Kessler’s two first places compared to four by the DAHS girls last year. Gwen King failed to defend her 3200 meter run title as the only returning DAHS district winner.“Our kids improved their times right down the line but we just got beat by better kids,” said DAHS coach Sam Richards.“Michelene Ferko will be goingto States as Applegate of Bradfordwithdrew from the 200 meter dash,” Richards added.We can’t be disappointed by our showing in any event. And I thought maybe Bryan Rairie could win the long and triple jumps but he lost by two inches in the triple and finished third behind Punxsy’s! Smith and our Rick Spicher in the long jump.”Jim Deter won the shot put for the Beavers with a heave of over 50-feet, which was four feet better than his nearest competitor and his best so far this year. “Jimmy got off that 50 foot throw on his first attempt and that kind of took the wind out of the rest of them,” said the DAHS coach.Alvetro came back to nip Deter at the tape in the finals of the 100 meter dash after the much bigger Deter had won the fast heat in the prelims. DAHS’s third sprinter, John Catanzarito, was right there to take fourth as he and Bradford’s Mike McGee were practically in a photo finish with Alvetro and Deter.DAHS’s Catanzarito just missed winning the 200 dash as McGee was given first place and Shane Hullings of St. Marys third in another 3-way, blanket finish.The Beavers’ 400 meter relay team of Bryan Rairie, Jamey Alvetro, Catanzarito and Deterblew away the opposition and nearly tied the district mark of 44.6 set by DAHS in 1980. Rairie led offand held his ground running in the middle of the track. Alvetro passed the Bradford and St. Marys second runners to give Catanzarito a nice lead and John and Deter didn’t slack off the near record-pace in romping home five metersahead of the Owls in a time of 44.8.Chris Buskirk had a busy day for the Beavers. He was in an opening 110 high hurdle heat, came back two races later to run the 300 Intermediate finals and win, and then took fifth in the 400 dash and high hurdles finals.Other placers not mentioned previously for DAHS were Tom Swisher fourth in the pole vault; Chuck Ferra third in the 300 IM hurdles; Rairie was third in the javelin after just taking up the event only a month ago; and the 3200 meter relay team with a fourth.The Beavers’ three firsts wereNEAR PERFECT DuBois Area High's John Catanzarito, lefthands the baton to anchorman Jim Deter in the 400 meter race which the Beavers won easily in the 1987 District track meet DAHS ran the event in 44.8 to just miss the record of 44.6 set by another Beaver team in 1980. This time Smith improved over 2 V2 feet and Rairie not quite 2 feet for the difference in 1987.Last year the DAHS boys were dead last with 26 points. The big gain to 57 points this season was due to maturity and dedication by those who placed yesterday. Jamey Alvetro lowered his sprint times dramatically as did Deter and Catanzarito to give the Beavers points in the shorter races. Buskirk did well all year in the hurdles and Rairie was a quadruple threat trackster before and now has added the javelin to his repertoire. All but Deter will be back in 1988 from this group.Stocking listOnly one body of water in Clear field County is scheduled for stock ing next week (May 17 - May 23).
