SOCCERSurf Moves Into First Place In WestBy VICTOR COTA Register Sports WriterANAHEIM — The California Surf combined the talents of young and old to post its first shutout of the season, 2-0. over the Edmonton Drillers at Anaheim Stadium Tuesday night.The win snapped a four-game losing streak and put the Surf in first place in the American West.Wolfgang Suhnholz, who some claim is getting old for this non-stop game, and Craig Allen, who some expect to blossom into a star some day, scored a goal each for the victory, witnessed by the smallest Surf crowd this year, 6,552.Suhnholz, 33, was playing in only his second match of the season. He has suffered muscle spasms and occasionally has expressed dissatisfaction with coach Peter Wall.Despite the layoff, Suhnholz looked his old sell, taking control of the midfield from the outset. His goal was unassisted, as he sent in a 20-yard shot on a free kick in the 48th minute. The goal was Suhnholz' first of the year.He couldn’t last the entire 90 minutes, though, tiring late in the match. His replacement was Allen, who capped the scoring in the 78th minute with his second goal of the season.Allen, 20, was virtually unnoticeable in 12 minutes he played. He did pop out once, scoring on a defensive lapse.The Channel Islands native squeezed his way past eenterback Bernie James and crossed the ball on goalkeeper Pertti Ala ja for the score. It was amazing he could score that way, since James had knocked a few Surf players around and Alaja had played a good game in goal up to that point.Suhnholz and Allen wasn't the only young and old combo which sparkled. Wall, 35, started his second match of the season on defense and Manny Neves, 19, also started his second at midfield.Wall was given the player of the match honors, while Neves ran around like an excited kid, getting in on the action whenever possible.Neves did more than that, though, as he created confusion for the Drillers, who are drilled by last year’s coach of the year, Timo Liekoski, to play under control.At one point, Neves was the target of a Surf indirect kick. He missed, but it proved the youngster is beginning to gain the respect of his teammates as well as his opponents.The score may have been more onesided had the Surf not missed on a few scoring chances and not been called offsides 16 times.Surf goalkeeper Mike Mahoney also played a key role in the shutout as he was credited with nine saves.Although happy with the win, Wallshowed displeasure with the officiating. “I’m not supposed to criticize the referees, but they are getting worse,” he said. “He (referee John Neachin) never gave us a call. How can I not get upset, my life is in his hands out there.”His life was in danger in another way, too. At the conclusion of the match, Wall was struck in the face by Edmonton’s Edi Kirschner after accidentally hitting him when he volleyed a ball. Both suffered cuts on the lip.Kirschner was charged with a red-card offense by the referee, but was not exactly given a red card, which would keep him out of Edmonton’s next home match.“I think we frustrated them (the Drillers) a lot,” Wall said. “They couldn’t do anything out there.The Surf, which will host the Cosmos Friday night, is 4-5.
