Last Inning Is First DownfallNorwich Merchants opened up their baseball season yesterday afternoon and probably wished they hadn’t when it was over with. The team lost to the Bingham-ton Merchants, 13-12, when the opposition scored three runs in the final inning to surge ahead by one run.Skip Lyne went all the way for Norwich as Jack Nolan pitchedsix innings for Binghamton beforehe was relieved by Denny Smith, who was credited with the win.Perhaps the most interesting run was one made by Barry Simmons for the local team when he drew a base on balls in the seventh inning. He then stole second base, advanced to third, and when Smith wound up and started his pitch, Simmons with a yell at the batter to “get out of the way” slid into home unopposed.Next week the team will host Montrose here.BINGHAMTON MERCHANTSLyne, p.
