Northridge Will Hold RegionalsBy FRANK MAZZEO Sports EditorCalifornia State University, Northridge will act as the host school May 23-25 for the NCAA College Division Western Regional baseball playoffs.The Matadors, according to Augie Garrido. chairman of the West Region Selection Committee, “Will receive an official bid tomorrow from the NCAA office. ” Garrido also informed Northridge coach Bob Hiegert that the “California Collegiate Athletic Association champion will be the host school for the playoffs.”Northridge, of course, is the NCAA champ and it will mark the third time the Matadors have acted as hosts for the tournament which leads directly to the NCAA College Division ‘ World Series in Springfield, III.Members of Garrido’s selection committe include Joe Cahgure of Oregon College of Education, Hiegert, Don Miller of Chico State, Mike Riskas of Pomona-Pitzer and alternates Bill Hicks of Cal Poly San Luis Obispo and Bob Pomeroy of Chapman.Since both Hiegert and Pomery coach teams that will participate in the regionals neither was included in this year’s voting to select tournament teams.Unlike past years when there have been four, or even five, teams entered, there will be just three vying for the trip to Illinois this season.Joining Bob Hiegert’s young Matadors will be independent Chapman and the champion from the Far . Western Conference (either UC Davis or Sacramento State).Northridge earned its spot m the regionals with a most remarkable comeback and with a display of one of Hiegert’s favorite words — courage.Last week end against San Luis Obispo, facing a rowdy crowd and tactics from the Mustang coaching staff that bordered on the unethical, it would have been easy for the Matadors to fold up.But, they did not and climbed to the top of the hill to plant a flag they richlydeserved.At one point.
