His 47.5 in the 440 dash was good enough for second place behind Charles Callahan of Southwest Texas.A1 Taylor, also a senior, finished two places behind Dyce in the quar-ter-mile event. His 48.6 was the fourth best time in the conference meet.Wayne Rucker broke the ET record in the pole vault, his 15-0 vault brining him fourth in the conference. The previous record was 14-6 set by Rucker in 1969 and David Sikes in 1963.Tim Davis threw the javelin 176’2” to capture the fifth place position in that event.In the 440 relay Eld Kubicek, Ira Gordon, Denis Dyce, and Ed Latimer clocked a 41.3 to finish fifth.The always present injuries showed up in Gordon and Don Armstead. Gordon pulled up lame in the finals of the 440 dash. Armstead pulled a muscle in the preliminaries of the 120 high hurdles.Six records were tied or broken in the annual event.In the 100-yard dash Robert Bradley of McMurry tied the existing record with a time of 9.4. Tony Garza, Texas AI; Jimmy White, SFA; Ernest Haynes, AI; and R. L. Lasiter, ET, all hold the record concurrently.Charles Callahan of Southwest Texas broke the 440 dash record set in 1964 by Morris Kyser of ET. Callahan’s 46.9 was .3 of a second faster than the old record.Howard Payne’s Marvin Utecht shattered the old record in the 440 intermediate hurdles with a 52.3 clocking. The old record of 53.7 was set by John Davenport of AI in1969.Southwest Texas’ mile relay team surpassed AI’s old record by .1 of a second.
