No less than five league marks were bettered during die WesCo track meet that night, two of them by representatives of local high schools.Edmonds' Dave Parke, pushed all the way by Steve Horning of Meadowdale, raced to a new mark in the mile run with a clocking of 4:25.2. At the same time, Meadowdale Chief pole vauiter Ray Payne soared to 13'7, bettering the old WesCo record by some seveninches.Bill Harsh of Everett broke two records in the meet. He tossed the shot 55' 8-1/4 to better the old mark and then heaved the discus 170' 11 for another record. Meadowdale's Jerry Pate finished right behind Harsh in the shot. The fifth new record came in the two mile run as Seattle Prep's Don Kardong clocked in at 9:40.5. Right behind him were Chuck Reiser of Edmonds and Terrace's Tom Rosenau, who took second and third respectively.Overall team scores saw Bellingham win the meet with an untouchable 90; Meadowdale was second with 75; Everett had 71, Edmonds 70, Cascade 56, Terrace 49, Bianchet 48, and Seattle Prep 37.Meadowdale took its fair share of first places, sweeping in three. Adding depth, the Chiefs grabbed two seconds and two thirds. Edmonds raked in one first, three seconds, and two thirds. Terrace had one top finisher, two seconds, and two thirds.Parke and Horning stole the spotlight in the record-shattering mile run. The two runnerswere not more than a stride apart for three laps. On the gun lap, however, Parke slowly pulled ahead of Homing until, at the finish line, he ledby 20 yards.Payne was another show-stopper with his fantasticvaults, Payne cleared 13—1tills week, he sailed over with ease, breaking the conference record. It was then raised to 13-3 then to 13-6 then to 13-7. He cleared them all. Finally, at 13-9, he barely brushed the bar off three times. Payne's next crack at arecord will come in the Northwest District meet where the current mark is 14' 1-1/4.Mountlake Terrace grabbed its only win in the high jump as Don Frame leaped 5' 10. Dave Miles placed second in the 440 for the Hawks and Jack Hall was second man in the pole vault.Greg Rice of Meadowdale put on a sizzling performance in the 880, completely out-distancing all competition and remaining undefeated for the season with a clocking of 2:03.1. Mike Ditzler of Terrace grabbed third in the event. The Chiefs' mile relay team provided some tlirilling moments as it ate up the track in 3:32.3 and ran away with the event. Greg Anabel, Mel Bowman, Jack Davidson, and Vera Taylor were the combination that never allowed the opposition to lead. The first six places in an event counted for points. His first hit came in the sixth inning when the Chiefs were lagging 2-1. He drove in the tying run. Then, in the bottom of the seventh with the score still tied, he sent the teams to the showers as he rapped a single and drove in the winning score. Both squads tallied eight hits, but Meadowdale played officially flawless ball as it committed no errors to Bianchet-s two.Besides Backes* two RBI’s, the Chiefs got on the scoreboard with one of their now-famous squeeze plays, executed by Rich Weight and Andy Bot-tin.Dennis Tibke pitched the entire game for the Chiefs.Friday, Meadowdale travels to Everett High for a league encounter.* * *Fasten your seat belts every time you drive or ride in your car.
