night in the best-of-7 senes that The 76ers led by as much as 16Carlsbad goes for perfect markTHE ASSOCIATED PRESSALBUQUERQUE - The Carlsbad Cavemen have i chance this week to do more than simply win a third straight Class AAAA state baseball title — they also get a shot at a little history.Carlsbad, 23-0 and working on a 31-game winning streak dating back to last season, met Gallup, 16-6, in today’s opening round at the Albuquerque Sports Stadium.Other first round matchups included Farmington, 20-2, against Alamogordo, 12-13, and Mayfield, 19-2, versus Albuquerque Cibola, 17-5, in games at the University of New Mexico field. Albuquerque Eldorado, 18-3, faced La Cueva, 17-4, at the Sports Stadium. The winners advance to Friday’s semifinals. The championship game is scheduled for 11a.m. Saturday at the Sports Stadium.Carlsbad is ranked No. 5 in the nation by USA Today and trying to become the first team in New Mexico high school baseball history to go through a season undefeated. The Cavemen are such overwhelming favorites that some of the opposing coaches have taken a light hearted approach to the tournament.“If we get in there (against Carlsbad), I’m gonna bring back Ward,” said Farmington coachmington standout pitcher and now Toronto Bluejays reliever Duane Ward.“I don’t think the challenge is beating them — it’s scoring on them,” added Cibola coach Bill Gracey.Gallup coach Rob Hollis grasped for a cliche in his team’s first round matchup with the Cavemen.“We don’t have anything to lose,” he said. “They have everything to lose. If we win, well be gods”Gallup’s upset bid will rely on the bats of center fielder Marcus Baca (.547) and shortstop Royce Williams (.503).Senior Shane Andrews leads a Carlsbad pitching staff for whom a description of “talented” is an understatement. Andrews, Rusty Young and Jamie Zuniga have a combined ERA of 0.48. Andrews, who like Young plays shortstop when not on the mound, leads the way with an 8-0 record and ERAof 0.24.Andrews has lost only one game during his high school career and is rated the state’s lop college and pro prospect. Equally tough with a bat, Andrews is hitting .531 with nine home runs and a state-leading 44 runs scored.Youngis9-0andZuniga4-0and hnth art* hittinf»over .100. Zuniea
