LINKS’ OUTLOOK PLEASES “PUG”Baseball Boss In Capital City Bent On Having Hustling Club.A hustling squad made up mostly of rookies will carry the hopes of the Lincoln Links in the race for the 1934 Nebraska State baseball league pennant.“And that doesn’t mean we’ll be ] anybody's pushover,” is the warning of Francis “Pug Griffin, Lincoln boy who spent several years as player and manager of Western league clubs before turning boss of the Links.In Zimmerman, another home town boy, and Callahan, veterans, and Seats, left-hand rookie hurler from Blythedale, Mo„ Griffin believes he has a trio of players headed for the big time if they keep on developing at their present strides.Veterans Hard Pressed.Other veterans back, but who are being hard pressed to hold their places are Neely and Underwood, hurlers, and Graham, third-sacker. Among the rookies making strong bids for regular positions are Lovett, Shy, Ginslinger and Bay. infielders; Schlagel and Swierkos, outfielders; Wilkinson, Ruff and TuIIy, catchers, and Marquard, Woods, Berger, Stahl and Anderson, pitchers. Marquard is a cousin of the well known Rube Marquard of the big leagues,I’m not making any predictions as to where we'll land when the season’s over, but w*!i have a hustling ball club,” Griiiin assured. “I believe the talent available here is as'good as that which turns out for the Western league, and with seme experience we’ll be okay.Squad Whittled to Thirty.Only about a week before the season opened, Griffin and Manager Cy Lingle had more than 30 men working out daily.“Wo had players of all kinds and all descriptions, and they’re still coming and going, Griffin said. He had more than a hundred candidates-working out before he began to use the ax on the squad.Besides intra-squad practice games, the Links planned only three exhibition games. They barely were nosed out by the Sioux City club of the Western league, 19 and 9, when the winning run was on base, after only about a week of workouts.Griffin has the Links scheduled to play the St. Joseph club of the Western league next Sunday at St. Joseph, and the House of David traveling team at Landis Field the night before the league opening May 15.
