The Chariton Independent baseball team ran its string of victories to three j straight by defeating the Simpson college nine. 7 to 0. here Wednesday in a benefit game, the pro- | ceeds of which are to go to the supervised playground fund sponsored in Chariton this summer.Fernando Johnson, ace righthander of the local squad, held the collegians to three hits in the seven innings played. The game was shortened because of darkness.Only in the first inni’jg did the visitors threaten to score. With only one out and the bases loaded Johnson forced the next batter to fly out. holding the man on third, and then retired the side by striking out the next man to face him.Chariton scored four runs in its half of the first. Again in the second inning the locals took advantage of two Simpson errors, combined with two singles by Williams and Montgomery, to push three more runs across the plate. From then on the game developed into a pitchers’ battle with Johnson holding an edge over French, i though neither team was able to score again.The Chariton team plays the Valley Junction A. C. nine on the local field next Sunday afternoon at 2:30, Manager D. L. Ambelang has announced. He also said that Chariton will play the strong House of David club here on Monday, May 21.
