Jack Dempsey, king of tilings pugilistic, is getting ready to defend his much-cherished title next September, Here we find him tugging away at the pulleys and skipping through a workout with Tillie “Kid” Herman, one of his sparring partners.BY JOE WILLIAMSHENDERSONVILLE, N- C-,May 10.—Rolling through Florida two months back I had come upon Gene Tunney doing light training on the beach just outside of Miami and the, chit-chat of the hour had inevitably turned to fighting—and to Dempsey.The soldier battler had a notion that sooner or later he would get the champion into the ring and he wg,s in a mood to discuss his prospects.Tunney expressed the belief that a b ody attack stressing the expert and vigorous usage of a left-hook would bring about the downfall of Dempsey.It should be mentioned that Tunney possesses a remarkable left-hook to the body. Technically it Is known to him as the liver punch,” for the obvious reasonthat the force of the attack is directed at the liver, ‘Tunney used this punch to stait Georges Carpentier on his way to a knockout and subsequently he belabored the antiquated Tommy Gibbons with the same weapon, accomplishing a complete surrender.The Frenchman couldn’t stand them in the stomach,” said Tunney, “and I rather think Dempsey will buckle up under the same kind of shots.”I asked Dempsey what hethought of his challenger's reasoning. Shrugging his big shoulders and half laughing he answered: I never saw anybodywho liked to get punched in the 6tomach.”Dempsey has no, illusions about being better than ever.
