COLLEGIANS MAKE GOOD CONVERTS IN HOUSE OF DAVIDGrowth of Long Hair Is to Show ‘Man Is to Be Same as He was Created’By FIELD BEAM ’37BENTON HARBOR, Mich., May 8. —(Special)—“Of all converts and members of the House of David, which embraces over 100,000 people the world over, college men have been found to make some of our best men/’This was the comment of four voices in unison, the voices belonging* to four, bewhiskered gentlemen of the House of David. The brothers were “taking it easy” today, basking in the sun.The House of David at Benton Harbor is the headquarters of the international religious organization. It was founded by a gToup of Australians in 1903 and officially opened in 190G. The settlement now has between 600 and 700 people, part of whom live inside the grounds which covers 10 square, miles, and the rest of whom reside in the settlement of Mary, just east, or on the number of truck farms about the settlement. The most striking thing about the men is,their advanced age. Of course, each possesses a wealth of whiskers and the usual long, tied hair. Two of the members explained that the purpose of the long hair—a universal mark of recognition—is to show that “man is to be the same as he was created.”Women and children make up a great part of the colony; most of the children, however, do not become converts. The settlement now possesses a complete zoo, a little theatre, an auditorium, the old, ball park, numerous concessions, and the miniature railway that connects the parts of their park.Their base ball team is scheduled to leave for a summer’s road trip next month. Their 14-piece orchestra left for an extended tour.
