Kolpakova took second in that race.“She realized she couldn’t make it today,” Selineyich said. “She (Spinnler) looked stronger today, because she probably prepared for this race.”Ruth Riemenschneider, who won the women’s masters division, has run in all but two Apple Blossom lOKs, and couldn’t remember a hotter one.“A lot of us tried to go out slow to compensate for the heat, but it still grabbed you halfway through,” Riemenschneider said. “A lot of us felt it on Jubal Early Drive. Very difficult.”The course was also tough for the runners. Changed from last year’s layout, many runners felt the new race was much hillier than previous lOKs.“It was more hilly than last\year,” McCullough said. “Coming up here the first mile and climbing that hill, that kind of set the tone for the rest.”Race director Rosie Schiavone was pleased with the turnout for the race, which had 231 female finishers despite the warm conditions.“I think everyone was hot,” said Schiavone, whose husband suffered from heat exhaustion after the race. “There were a couple who went down, and the rescue squad was busy. It was a good race. I think we probably would have even had better times if it wasn’t so hot.”Winchester’s Brooke Fillmore agreed.“Very hot,” she said, describing the conditions. “It’s kind of the first hot day of the season. I was a little bit slower than I normally am.“Usually I run earlier in the morning, but it was a good route, well marked out.”
