A field of 600 runners entered the race and 560 finished.from Page D1By the one-mile mark, Doug Walter, of Chambersburg, Pa., and Tom Stevens, of Middletown, Md., had joined the leaders and a pack of five broke away from the field. The lead pack, with Woshner in the lead for most of the time, kept up a fast pace.Just before the halfway point of the race on north Braddock Street, Stevens began to fade. The long hill on South Braddock Street, halfway through the race, took its toll on Woshner, who faded from the lead to a fourth-place finish.“I just couldn’t keep up,” Woshner said. “It was a lot faster pace than I thought it would be. But I’m happy with my time (31:20).”Going out Valley Avenue, Stoner and Stickley pulled away from Walter and turned it into a two-man race. When they made the turn at the intersection of Valley Avenue and Cedar Creek Grade, Stoner and Stickley were matching each other stride-for-stride.With one mile left, Stickley moved into the lead and held it for the next 800 yards.“I had to make a move then (with 800 yards left),” Stoner said. “I couldn’t let Mark continue to lead. He could have pulled away. I made my move and with about 600 yards left I had a 10-yard lead. Right then I told myself I had to run hard. I counted to 20 and ran as hard as I could during those 20 seconds.“I wanted to have a big enough lead when 1 made the turn (onto Handley Boulevard) that it wouldn’t be a foot race to the finish.”Stoner’s late kick did just what he wanted. Four miles into the race, however, he had problems with cramps.“I backed off a little, but not too much,” Stoner said. “I started running with ease. I ran just hard enough so the leaders didn’t get too far ahead. After a little easy running, I was all right.” tFor Stickley, it was the first Apple Blossom 10K he’s run since winning in 1992.“(Stoner) had one more move in him than 1 did,” Stickley said. “He’s tough. I ran a good race, but he ran a better race.“I took the lead with about a mile left. I thought he might be hurting and I could take a lot out of him by making him chase me. But when he passed me with about 600 yards left and opened up a little lead, it was over.”Walter finished third (30:58), Woshner took fourth (31:20), and Stevens ended up fifth (32:29).The women’s race developed into a three-runner race early, with Pazarentzos, Steams, and Laura Nelson (also from Hagerstown) bolting into the early lead.Through the first half of the race, the three runners took turns running in the women’s lead. It wasn’t until the halfwaypoint that Pazarentzos moved into the lead for good.“I really wanted to follow the lead most of the way,” Pazarentzos said. “But the way things were developing, with the three of us taking turns leading, I decided about halfway through to try and break away. I thought that would finish it one way or the other. I got out and Jennifer moved with me, but I was able to hold her off.“I enjoyed running here two years ago. I was looking for a good, competitive race. I’m training for the marathon and I needed a good race. My goal is to make the Olympic marathon trials.”Pazarentzos finished 18th overall.Nelson was the third female runner in with a 37:05. Ruth Riemenschneider, the 1991 winner, was fourth (39:36) and Carolyn Wilson took fifth (39:51).Stearns was expecting a fast pace because of Pazarentzos.“It was a pretty fast pace from start to finish,” Steams said. “It was close through the first three miles, but when Maria made her move, she had too much speed.“She went out and got a good four-second lead at about the halfway mark and I couldn’t catch her.”Last year, Steams won with a 37:52. In 1993, Pazarentzos had a winning time of 36:52.
