It was the second straight year Stoner has won the race. Maria Pazarentzos (above) was the first female runner to finish. She also won in 1993.Defending champion Earl Stoner knew it would take all the finishing speed he could muster to win the 14th Annual Apple Blossom 10K on Saturday.Stoner was right. He needed the fifth-best time in the race’s history to outkick 1992 champion Mark Stickley and win his second straight Apple Blossom 10K title on a cool, breezy morning.A field of 600 runners started the race and 560 finished in front of Handley High School.Stoner, from Hagerstown, Md., raced home with a winning time of 30:39, 10 seconds faster than Stickley of Strasburg.Stoner’s pace for the 6.2-mile race was 4:56 a mile and he bettered his winning time of last year (31:19) by 40 seconds.“The pace was a little faster than I wanted,” the 26-year-old Stoner said. “But, when I learned Mark was running just before race time, I knew it would be fast.”The course record is 29:24.4, set in 1984 by Michael Musyoki. In 1983, Musyoki won with a time of 30:04. The third-best time was Stickley’s 30:20 in 1992. And in 1982, the first year of the Apple Blossom 10K, Gary Siriano turned in the fourth-best time of 30:38.Maria Pazarentzos, also of Hagerstown, denied Jennifer Steams the honor of becoming the all-timeleader for wins in the women’s division. Steams, from Dumfries, won last year to tie her with Kim Bums for most Apple Blossom victories with three.Pazarentzos, the 1993 winner, sprinted to the finish line with a four-second win over Stearns. Pazarentzos crossed the finish line in 36:48.“I was looking for a good race and I got it from Jennifer,” Pazarentzos said. “She’s a tough runner. She stayed close the whole way.”The race started with James Wood girls’ track coach Craig Woshner jumping out to a quick lead with Stoner and Stickley hot on his heels.See Apple Bloaaom 10K Page D2
