Santa Fe's Maas, Riley shoot for repeat titlesBy SALO OTERO The New Mexican StaffDan Maas and Tony Riley, defending state champions, headline the Santa Fe schoolboy and schoolgirl track and field athletes competing today in the Class A and AA state meet in Albuquerque.Action starts at 1 p.m. at the new University of New Mexico track facility. The meet was originally scheduled for Wilson Stadium.Maas, from Santa Fe Preparatory School, won theClass A 1600 and 3200 meter runs last spring. Prep is now in Class AA.Maas also qualified to state in the 800, but will scratch from that race to anchor Prep's top-notch 1600 medley relay that also includes Rodger Baca, Pual Shook andStuart Day.Riley, from Santa Fe Indian School, won the Class AA 5800 meter run. Riley is now a sophomore. He also qualified in the 400.Coach Mike Gorospe's SFIS boys and girls teams won their district for the third straight season and four in the last five years.Santa Fe Indian School qualified seven girls to state.1A AAA. 2AAA. AAESPANOLA — The District 1AAAA tennis tournament starts today at noon at the Espaftola Valley High School Gallegos Courts.Wendall Barnett, Espahola coach, is the tourney director.The tourney resumes Saturday at 9 a.m. with the finals.Santa Fe and Farmington are favored in the girls division. Cindy Brown of Los Alamos is one of the top singles players.Top boys players are Gary McDonald of Los Alamos and Paul Armstrong of Santa Fe.St. Michael’s is competing in the District 2AAA tournament in Las Vegas today and Saturday.The Santa Fe Preparatory girls are also involved in district play at Albuquerque Academy today and Saturday.The first two finishers in each division advance to state.long jump; Naomi Gutierrez, high jump, 460; Claudine Pe?na, 3200; Val Martinez,hurdles and in the relays, Rosemary Touchin, Rhonda Natseway and Annete Lorenzo.Joining Riley in the boys are Braves Joe Deutsawe, javelin; Robert Cherosposy, javelin; Casey Ellsworth, shot put; John Concha, hurdles; Shawn Daniels, pole vault; Jeff Lucas, 200; Cory Torivio, 1600; Ivan Toledo, 3200; JoeCalabaza, 800; Jake Koopee, 800; Chuck Mangum, highjump and Claude Romero, relays.Prep's Baca also qualified in the 100, Shonk in the 200 and long jump, Mark Rodriguez, high jump and Day, 800.Amaya Chalker, 100, long jump; Jenni Pittman, 1600, discus; Allison Brooks, 3200 and Maria Ha us man, relay.In Class A, St. Catherine Indian School will have three boys, Chris Toya and Farlan Coyote in the distances; and Charles Gonzales in the its and four girls, Marie liije, hurdles; Wynona Larson, 1600, 3200; Melisssa Gonzales, 800 and Jessica Rael, discus.New Mexico School for the Deaf qualified Corina Gutierrez, 100,400, 200, long jump; Monica Rodriguez, shot put; Yolanda Amaro, 200 and Jane Berdoza will join the three in the 4x100 relay.Also in Class A, Mesa Vista has a long list of athletesheaded by Carol Harms and Yvonne Fields, who won four events and one relay in district. The Mesa Vista boys have district double winner Gerald Lovato (high jump, 400).In AA, Pecos, Peilasco and McCurdy Mission {Espanola) athletes are competing.Pefiasco is led by Wilfred Griego, defending state champion in the 3200 and double winner in district last week.Pefiaseo and Pecos girls had two double winners at district. Pefiaseo’s Lupe Ro-darte (hurdles) and Carol Brown (distances) won two events along with Pecos’ Margaret c de Baca (high jump, 400) and Theresa McWilliams.Tatum High School will be seeking a fifth straight state girls championship in Class A.Tatum is favored to extend its domination in the girls division behind athletes like juniors Joey Hilbum, Tina Brooks and Kerilynn Scott.Fort Sumner should provide most of the competition forTatum.Clayton, Crownpoint and Eunice are the favorites in the girls Class AA competition.Clayton is the overwhelming favorite to take the boys Class AA title behind hurdler and sprinter Greg Durbin, speedster Gilbert Gutierrez and igh jumpers Cory Beekner ana Doug Podzemny. Beekner and Jerry Murray also run the hurdles for the Yellow jackets.Clayton, with Durbin and Gutierrez, will be tough to beat in the relay races from 400 meters to 1,600 meters.Hagerman is the defending boys champ in Class A, and the Bobcats have enough depth to repeat, Adan Ornelas, a sprinter who also runs dlthe hurdles and long jumps is the team leader.Tatum, Melrose andSorinCer are exneoted to nhal-
