Wooster pedals to first in W'mstowriJames Wooster, a 24-year-old teacher in the Savoy school system easily won the Wiliiamstown bicycle race Saturday, pedaling the 25-mile course in one hour and 25 minutes, eight minutes ahead of the No, 2 man.Fourteen racers entered the event,sponsored in connection with the Williams College Bikecoiogy Week. The course started on Water Street, headed south on Rt. 7, past Brodie Mountain, over Brodie Mountain Road, and back to Wiliiamstown on Rt. 43. Oranges and gorp, (a combination of chocolates, nuts and dried fruit were served at the finish.The most exciting race was ridden by Ralph Hannus who came in third in 1.35. His chain broke, sidelining him at the bottom of Brodie Mountain Road, but he made a quick repair and then overtook two racers in the last five miles of the race to claim third place.The youngest racer was William Peabody 11-year-old son of Mr. and Mrs. Chace Peabody of 30 Hoxsey St., who used only one gear of a three-speed bicycle to get around the course in 2.08 and finish eighth.Mr. Wooster’s victory was forecast a week ago Sunday when he was first around the 21-mile course for the Ride a Bike for the Retarded event.The order of finish and times were: James Wooster, 1.25; Timothy Raetz, 1.33; Ralph Hannus, 1,35; David Gamari, 1.37; Lewis C. Cuyler, 1.39; Mark Goyette, 1.52; William Sweet, 1.54; William Peabody, 2.08; and Kenneth Kessel and Donald Scroggin, lie for ninth with 2.28. Four did not finish.The race was organized by Anita Brewer and Anne Webster, both Williams students.
