Fortunately but few vehicles were on Main street at tiie time and the pedestrians received warning in time to make their escape. The team was hitched to the “dead wagon” belonging to the Hurlbut Undertaking company. The horses had been hastily hitched to the wagon at b£ the barn at the corner of Fourth street and Virginia avenue for the purpose of going after the body of the murdered Italian in the Kansas City bottoms. It seemed that the driver was in a hurry and dropped the lines when he climbed onto the seat. The horses started west on Fourth street at a flurious pace. At the comer of Main and Fourth they just missed a popcorn stand.Finding themselves without a driver and the crowds on the street yell- s’ ing at them, the horses became wild and started on a fast run south on Main street. As the outfit raced down the thoroughfare the driver made his way through the covered wagon and dropped to the street from the rear step. He was not injured. The horses attempted to turn east on Seventh street, hut the wagon struck a telephone pole at the southeast corner and the animals were Jhrown on the smooth stone sidew'k. The e horses were not much injured, being t dhly slightly bruised. The wagon was slightly scratched and the harness broken in many places. It was a fortunate ending of a spectacular runaway.afcthGssintirrn;aialt;tiSSOtlrlt;isatt1
