A Loose Shoe Doesn’t Slow Johnston DownBy MATTHEW TABEEKThe Winchester StarKristy Johnston was determined not to let anything stand in her way of winning the 2001 Apple Blossom SunCom 10K Race Saturday morning. Not even a loose running shoe.Johnston, an accomplished runner from Shepherdstown, W.Va., who competes in nearly 30 races a year, had to rely on her experience and overcome a series of obstacles before winning the second Apple Blossom 10K of her career in 37 minutes, 13 seconds. Before Johnston could even think about catching up to de-fending champion Maria Spinnler Saturday, she had to first avoid losing her running shoe. It came loose after she circled the Handley Bowl near the start of the race.“After the first mile, my shoelace started to loosen and my shoe came loose,” said Johnston, who finished second in the 2000 U.S. Olympic Marathon Trials (2:35:36) and also had the second fastest time (2:32:34) for an American woman in the 1999 ChicagoSee Women*s 10K Page C2
