By Shelby LymanMore often than not, matches for the world title are epic confrontations. The Fiscfeer-Spassky Match of 1972, Karpov-Korchnoi 1978 and Kasparov-Kaipov 1984, each an uncompromising chess battle with political overtones, immediately come to mind. In recent years, the legitimacy of the title itself - there are now two claimants for the title of world champion - has become an added object of struggle.Although Alexander Khalifinan became the World Chess Federation (FIDE) titie-hoiderin August by winning an exacting 100-play-er knock-out tournament in Las Vegas, his claim to be World Champion is vulnerable to challenge. On the most recent international rating list, Khalifinan is ranked only 29th while Kasparov and Vladimir Kramnik - who will play a match for Kasparov’s World Chess Council title later this year - are ranked first and second. At a March press conference, Kasparov based his argument for the legitimacy of his title on his statistically supported and universally acknowledged status as the strongest player in the world:“Because I am still the best player, it’s not about good or bad. You can like me or dislike me, and must chess players dislike me as do most chess journalists, but that doesn’t matter. There are realities that people have to respect. TheFIDE event has little credibility in the eyes of the outside world and very little credibility m the world of chess because it’s not about finding out who is the best player.“To become the best player in the world you have to win either the tournament with the best players or to beat the reigning World Champion. There is no other way, no matter how much legitimacy an organization is throwing behind you.”In the blitz game below, Kramnik shows his impressive strength by easily beating fellow Russian, Valery' Salov.Kramnik SalovWijk aaa Zee 19981. e4 e52.
