NCAA Regionals• •♦Likely At Tacoma44*Although reigning national champion UC Irvine, probable CCAA champion Fullerton State and northern owner Puget Sound are virtually in the field, nothing may be settled concerning the NCAA regional baseball layoffs until May 15*We’re waiting for the Far West Conference to be settled,” said selection committee chairman Don Edwards of UC Riverside. “We’ll probably take one team from there. A conference call involving the schools concerned has been set for the15th.”He indicated Puget Sound was the earliest “sure” team as the best of the north with a 17-4 start and that Fullerton would be next with its magic number of two for clinching a crown. UCI apparently eliminated Cha-man from the running with a Saturday doubleheaded sweep.“I wouldn’t say Irvine is in yet, but it looks very gdod for them,” Edwards commented. “It looks pretty much like the four-team tourney will be held the weekend of May 20 unless the Far West suddenly gets cleared up.“The committee is tending to lean towards the north as a site since it has been in the south for about the last six years. If it was held up there it would be a Tacoma (Wash.) Stadium where the Twins’ farm team plays.”It is surprising the group is so hesitant about naming a UCInine that has ranked No. 1■nationally all season, currently has won 22 straight, 37 of 44 in all and downed traditional university powers USC and Arizona State.Irvine is very interested in hosting the event for the second straight year and is being heavily supported by Fullerton, now No. 3 in the U.S.*UC Davis, Hayward State and Humboldt State are the teams battling for FWC honors.Edwards’ committee includes Mike Riskas of Cal Poly Pomona, Joe Caligure, Oregon College, Don Miller of Chico State and Jim Whitley from Bakersfield State, with BiT Hicks of Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo and Bert Merriman, Southern Oregon, serving as alternates.SCC Forfeits,Falk New CoachForced to forfeit 17 of 22 victories due to use of an ineligible player, Jack Robinson has been replaced as Southern Cal College baseball coach and is not expected back to continue a very successful wrestling program.
