Earns Her 5th Women’s 10K TitleNATIONSThe VMfmer Star . 'Maria Spinnler has become a veteran of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom’s Grand Feature Parade.Five times npW, the Hagerstown, Md., runner has taken her place in the procession as the overall women’s champion of the Shenandoah Apple Blossom 10K.On Saturday she earned her Fifth ride by topping the field with a winning time of 36 minutes, 52 seconds in the21st annual event. The winning time was the same one she posted in her 1993 victory.“Each year it gets a little tougher,” said the 40-year-old Spinnler. “As you get older, it gets a little tougher.” Judging by her performance, Spinnler didn’t have to struggle too much this year.Trailing Winchester’s Brenda Schrank in the early going, Spinnler caught up just a little more than a mile into the race and took the lead for good.Amy Debor of Shepherdstown, W.Va., took second and Schrank was third.With ideal running conditions — mildly cool temperatures and just a light breeze — Spinnler thought it was a “perfect” day to race.With her knowledge of the course — she annually competes in the race and also won in 1993, 1995, 1999, and 2000 — Spinnler resisted the temptation to try and keep up with Schrank in the early going.“I let her go,” Spinnler said. “I was just kind of watching her because I’mnot familiar with how she runs. She’s new to the area, so I just wanted to let her take the lead and kind of see what she was going to do.”Schrank, who recently moved to Winchester from Colorado Springs, Colo., tried to set a fast pace early. While she didn’t win the overall title, Schrank was happy with her time of 37:47.“I tried a different strategy,” Schrank said. “I went out hard. I haven’t run a lot of lOKs. I’m a marathon runner, so I went ahead and went out hard.
