He struck out 20 and threw the other man out at first base when he tried to bunt his way on.A lefthander, Gullett has an earned run average of zero in the seven games he has pitched this season. With a shutout win over Russell in the district tournament Tuesday, he brought his record to 6-1 on the year. His only loss came against Portsmouth High School who beat him on unearned runs.Gullett has given up nine hits in 31 innings and has a total of/78 strikeoutsGullett baits right handed and has an average well over .500 in McKell's twelve games to date. He plays center field when not pitching.Gullett said at least 15 major league teams have been in contact with him. They include the Reds, New York Mets, Washington Senators and the San Francisco Giants to name a few.A B-plus average in high school has probably helped Gullett draw some of the 30 colleges who have contacted himin reference to scholarships. Some of the larger schools include Alabama, Tennessee, Florida, Indiana and Illinois.These schools are some of the noted grid powers in the country and have no doubt been impressed by Gullett’s awesome football statistics.He holds the Kentucky state record for most points scored in one football game and led the state in scoring with 243 points this past sason.Gullett claimed the one-game record when he racked up 72 i points with 11 touchdowas and j six extra points against Wurt-land in McKell’s last regular season game. The final score in that game was 72-0.Coach Jim Hastings said Gullett averaged 40 yards a punt for the football team and that he picked up 475 yards rushing I in the outburst against Wurt-j land. |Gullett has been picked for the Kentucky All-Star game to beplayed in Lexington later this summer and was named honorable mention All-American infootball.Also a basketball player, Gullett was the team’s leading scorer in his junior year and second in scoring this season.Asked about his plans for the future, Gullett said he hopes to sign with a major league baseball team and continue his schooling in the winter if possible.
