This year's event vard during the start of last year's Apple Bios- starts Saturday morning at 8:30.By MATTHEW TABEEK_The Winchester Star_Joe Gibson had never heard of the Apple Blossom Festival nor it’s 10K race through the hilly streets of downtown Winchester before last year. After winning the race in 31 minutes, 16 seconds, Gibson pocketed his winner’s check of $500 and had the unforgetable experience of riding aboard one of the floats in the Grand Feature parade.Gibson, now 24 years old and graduated, said he enjoyed the whole experience so much that he plans to return and defend his title at the 20th annual Apple Blossom SunCom 10K Saturday morning.“I think I’m suited well for the course, especially with the steady climb from the 3te-mile point to the finish line,” Gibson said in a telephone interview from Clemson, S.C., Tuesday night. “I’ve been a hill climber all my life.”The race starts at 8:30 a.m. at the north side of the Handley Bowl at Handley High School.Maria Spinnler, who nowhas won the last two women’s titles, also confirmed on Wednesday that she plans to go for a three-peat. The 39-year-old mother finished the course last year in 37:11 and said running in Winchester is important to her.“I really like the Apple Blos-^ som race. It’s not my hometown, but I’m from the area,” Spinnler said. “It’s always nice to run in front of people that know you and pull for you.”Ruth Riemen-schneider, 43, won the master’s division (age 40 and up) in 41:47 last year. For her husband, Neal Riemenschneider, Saturday’s race will mark the 700th of his career.Gibson, who currently lives in Brevard, N.C., first learned about the Apple Blossom 10K from his ex-roommate Mike Connelly, a former track standout at James Wood High School. Although Connelly will be competing at Stanford University over the weekend for Clemson, Gibson said he plans to stay with Connelly’s family in Winchester again.“I took the fall off (from run-See 10K Race Page C5Star Photo by Michael BrannonLoudoun St.iWashington St.
