04 THE WINCHESTER STAB. Tummfy. May 4. 1993Pazarentzos Always on RunBy WAYDE BYARDBy ail rights, Maria Pazarentzos, the women’s winner in Saturday’s Apple Blossom 10K, should have been exhausted before she started namingAfter all, she had been in jail until midnight the night before.Actually, Pazarentzos wasn’t in jail in the traditional sense of that term. She was, however, checking in a wayward youth in her capacity as an intake officer in Hagerstown, Md.That’s just one of three jobs the 31-year-old Pazarentzos holds down in addition to keeping a busy running schedule. She also works at Hagerstown Junior College with a teen/parent program that attempts to keep 13-to 1 ^year-olds in school. Failing that, the program tries to get them back in school. Failing that, Pazarentzos tries to get the former students to get a general equivalency diploma with an eye toward future vocational training. She also works with the Career Keys program, which tries to aid economically disadvantaged young adults between the ages of 16 and 21.In between. Pazarentzos squeezes in her training, which isn’t always easy.“You’ve got to stay focused and I am focused. But with the job I have. I’m on call—my job with juvenile services—I'm on call from 5 o'clock at night until 8 o’clock in the morning.”Her race schedule is no jog through the park either The Apple Blossom 10K marked Pazarentzos’ third competitive outing in 10 days. On April 22, she competed in the 10,000 meters at the Penn Relays and ran a 5K event the following Saturday. Her clocking at the Penn Relays was 34:28.“I’ve had two races back-to-back and you usually don’t want to do that. But I wanted to come down (to Winchester),” she said. Her coach (Greg Shenk, of Hagerstown) let Pazarentzos runthe Apple Blossom race on the promise she’d go easy.“Time isn’t a factor in a race like this. You just come to try to win,’’ Pazarentzos said.Even Pazarentzos admits she needs to cut back on her activity a little, but she’s got miles to go before she sleeps.“I deserve a rest, I do.“But I’ve got some training to do here in the month of May. I’m going to run a really fast track race downStar Photo ty Ginger Perryin Georgetown, I’ve got a couple low-key races, then I’m trying to get ready for nationals in June in Eugene, Ore.”Pazarentzos has qualified for the United States National Track and Field Championships in the 5,000 meters (she’s qualified in the 10,000 before) and has high hopes for that race.Until then Pazarentzos will lay low and go slow, or as low and slow as she can go.Star Photo by Gingar PerryCourtney Campbell of Berryville ran with a small handicap.Apple Blossom 10K WinnersIFemale f 11Male1982Charlene Reachey 111982Gary Siriano1983Kim Belyea Burns mi1983Mike Musyoki1984*Kim Belyea Burns 1111984*Mike Musyoki1985Sue Crowe 1I 1985Bill Stewart1986Kim Belyea Burns ^1986Bill Stewart1987Barbar Dotson ■1987Bill Stewart1988Jen Van Horn1988Mike Cronin1989Donna Elliot ^rl1989Calvin Biesecker1990Ruth Riemenschneider '{ 1990Bill Stewart1991Kirsten HartiesV 1991Bill Stewart1992Jen Van Horn1992Mark Stickley1993Maria Pazarentzos1993Merrill Hausenfluck
