Waverly’s top time was 1:37.57. Marshall’s Greg Bush, Mike Whitney, Dave Meade, and Dave Nantz placed fourth in the medley relay in a 3:55.94 effort. Greenville won the race in 3:44.14.Penning, Robison, Mike Carroll, and Tymkew ran Marshall’s best time of the year in the 880 relay, finishingthird in 1:33.42. In the polevault, Steve Bale’s 12’3” performance was his best ever and, combined with Tim Wallen’s 10’6” effort, gave the ’Skins a 22’9” total and fourth place.One record was set in the meet. Eaton Rapids won the discus with combined throws of 379’9”, cracking the 374’33/4” standard set last year by Portage Northern.Northern took firsts in the two-mile relay and shot put, in addition to the distance medley. The two-mile team was clocked in 8:17.57, and the shot putters threw for a 130’5^” combined total.Charlotte won the high jump, the final event of the meet. The three-man team' cleared a total of 18’ to take first place.Although the Redskins failed to place in the event, Rick Tymkew set a personal mark in the long jump. TheMarshall senior leaped20’9'/2 ”, topping his season-high by over 18 inches.Tuesday at 4:30 p.m. Marshall hosts Sturgis and Hillsdale in a double-dual meet. The team travels to Jackson Thursday for a 6:30 confrontation with Northwest High School.Gerry Hice was tagged with the loss.Portage drew first blood in the second inning, scoring a pair of runs off two hits, a walk, and an error.Third baseman Bob McKinney opened the frame by reaching first when Redskin leftfielder Greg Weatherly dropped a fly ball. Larry VanLiere moved McKinney to second on a sacrifice, and he scored on a single by Scott Johnson.Hice issued a walk to junior catcher Roger Meschke, and LaPorte loaded the bases when he singled. A double by Kevin Tully brought the second Mustang run across the plate.Marshall picked up a run in the third inning off four hits. Weatherly opened with a single, but was thrown out trying to take third on a bunt single by catcher Steve Wasielewski. Marty Las^y moved Wasielewski to third with another single, and went to second when the Mustangs tried to make a play on the Marshall catcher. A single by Jim Ronan sent Wasielewski home.In the fourth inning, Central scored the winning runs with three hits and two Marshall errors. Johnson singled and Meschke walked to begin the frame, and both advanced a base on LaPorte’s sacrifice. Tully reached first on a error by shortstop Sayers, loading the bases.Another Sayers’ error on a ball hit by Jerry Simpson, allowing Johnson to score. Second baseman Brad Gebben picked up two RBIs on a double that put runners on second and third, and they scored on a long single by McKinney.Marshall cut the lead 7-2 in the bottom of the fourth on a hit, sacrifice, and throwing error. Sanders singled and moved to second on a sacrifice by rightfielder Russ Smaston. He moved from second to home on a careless throw by Portage.In the sixth frame the ’Skins made a comeback bid, but it fell short. LaPorte walked Ronan, and he moved to third on a double by Sayers. Both runners scored when Smaston ripped a long double. Two runs were all Marshall could tally before the inning ended.Greenville edged Napolean in the second game, 5-4, setting up the afternoon consolation contest between the Pirates and MarshallSteve Wasielewski viewed the game from a fresh perspective, leaving his duties behind the plate to pitch the Skins to an easy 10-4 triumph.Bill Bunker was ambushed by the Redskins and was saddled with the loss.A six-run fourth inning gave the ’Skins the victory. Ronan walked to start the rally, and moved to second when Sayers reached first on an error by third baseman Gary Todd. Bunker walked Sanders, loading the bases and setting up a run-scoring sacrifice fly by Smaston that allowed everyone to advance a base. Gabby Rivard singled, scoring Sayers, and Weatherly was walked to load the bases again. Another walk, this one to Wasielewski, forced in a run. Bob Phillips then laced a three-run double, giving Marshall a 10-4 lead.
