Ginnell pursues new lookitalentPat GinnellWhen Pat Ginnell took over as coach and general manager of Victoria Cougars last December, he promised changes to improve the team’s image — both on and off the ice.Cougars, an also-ran in their first two seasons in the Western Canada Hockey League, showed a definite improvement under Ginnell’s guidance and missed a playoff spot by only seven points. In the 38 games with Ginnell behind the bench, Cougars were 16-19-3 and most of the wins were pasted at home.Fans responded to theCallaghantops voteLONDON — Midfielder Ian Callaghan of Liverpool has been selected as Britain’s soccer player of the year by the British Sports Writers’ Association.Callaghan, who has played 652 consecutive games, finished three votes ahead of runner-up Billy Bremner of First Division-champion Leeds United.Monday results:ENGLISH LEAGUE First Division Stoke 1, Manchester U, 0.Bournemouth HoMqx Town Southend United Btockbum Rovers Tronm§re Rovers WohoHPlymouth JvpyWHerefordtr^nTonCorlton AlWoticPort Vok Combndg* United Shrtwtlxxy Town Southport Rochdota16 1513 2116 14 18 1015 1516 1217 914 1516 II17 8 14 13 12 9 10 11 6 16 2 1715 54 11 4616 62 17 6116 5017 57 17 58 17 53 19 52 19 6218 52 24 4525 41 24 3527 3858 4/50 47 62 46 62 46 44 4548 4449 4357 4358 43 73 42 58 41 80 33 62 31 82 28 94 21Fewrtfc DMslwiGHinohom 25 12 8 88Pettrborough 25 11 7 68Cdch*»tor 24 12 10 73Bury 23 11 II 79North'pton Town 20 12 13 63HmxUv 16 19 11 58frotford City 17 14 15 5845 62 32 6136 60 48 57 48 5237 51 52 48team’s success by turning out in healthy numbers and now Ginnell has taken advantage of that late-season optimism to launch the second phase of the campaign to make Victoria a WCHL power.Besides scouring the prairie provinces for player help, Ginnell has started a season-ticket campaign, confirmed a broadcast contract for all Cougar games next season, finalized plans for a National Hockey League-style program and, in a major move to boost the “new” Cougars, ordered completely new uniforms.Cougars will hit the ice next October in the royal blue andred combination somewhat similar to that of the New York Rangers — royal blue sweaters and stockings with red and white trim, and red gloves, pants and helmets.Cougars have had red, white and black uniforms for their first three WCHL seasons but they’re worn out and a complete change was necessary.Ginnell was also contemplating a change in team name but decided against it after receiving some reaction from fans.“Victoria’s hockey team has been the Cougars for many years,” Ginnell said, “and fans appear to like it. From what I’ve heard since coming to Victoria, it’s been some of the people associated with the club that fans have been upset with.”The season-ticket drive hasnetted about 225 sales, not an earth-shattering number but almost twice as many as the club sold last year. Ginnell is aiming for 1,000 season-ticket holders for next season. The broadcast contract is with radio station CJVI (900 kcs.) and Paul Carson will handle the play-by-play reporting and Gorde Hunter will supply color commentary on all home games. As for the new players, Ginnell has attended minor-league playoffs in Alberta and Saskatchewan recently and has been most impressed withseveral youngsters on the team’s protected list.Paul Reyda, a big 16-year-old from North Vancouver, was named outstanding defenceman at the prestigious Swift Current International Midget “A” tournament this month and Lome McConnell, a 16-year-old from Swift Current, was named runner-up. They’ll both be at training camp in September. And two 15-year-olds from Quesnel, goalkeeper Steve Amis and left-winger Rod Guimont, also showed well at the same tourney. They bothattended the Cougar rookie camp here earlier this month and both should be candidates for positions with Nanaimo Clippers, the Cougar affiliate in the B.C. Junior Hockey League. ^Ginnell is in Calgary to meet with newly-hired scout John Vogel and discuss prospects in the southern Alberta area. They’ll also attend the Memorial Cup playoffs in Calgary next week and Ginnell expects to complete some deals.“I’ve had several offers of trades since the end of theSeven Victorians bidfor spots on B.C. sideSeven Victoria players have earned invitations to the B.C.
