FRIDAY, MAY 1, 1953Holland Christian WinsOver Grand Haven NineTom Maring HurlsHis Finest GameOf Y oung SeasonHolland Christian's base I a 11 club turned in its finest game of the season Thursday afternoon at Riverview Park as the Maroonsedged the Grand Haven Buccaneers, 3-2 in a fast moving encounter. It was Christian’s second win against thre setbacks so far this vear.Tom Maring, the Maroons’ No. I pitcher, had one of his good days against the Bucs and kept out of trouble most of the afternoon. He walked just three batters and kept seven hits well scattered. Meanwhile, his teammates rose to the occasion in the tighest spots to pull him out what little difficulty he did run into. The Maroons pulled off two double plays, but committed three errors, two charged to Maring.Two Buc flingers, Fisher and Van Tol, shared the Grand Havenmound chores. Fisher started, but was relieved in the sixth inning.Grand Haven started scoring in the first inning when a triple by Bob Klukos, and a double bycatcher McPhee produced onemarker. A Dutch error also figured in the scoring.Christian came right back in itshalf of the first, tallying a lone marker without the aid of a hit. A walk, a stolen base and an infield error did the damage for theBucs.Coach John Ham’s club took aone run lead in the fourth frame on a single by Bob Venema, an infield out and another one base knock by catcher Earl Rotman.Klukos gnotted the count for the visitors in their half of thefifth as he blasted a home lain over the centerfielder's head. Actually the Christian center-vfielder misjudged the long fly. allowing it to sail over his head to bring in Klukos with the tying marker.The Hollander's pushed winning run acro«6 in the inning. After loading the on two hits and a walk, Ste-ggerda lined out to left. While the left fielder was attempting to double a Christian runner at second, Vance Bouman, who was on third, romped home with the winning run.Rotman led the Dutch attack with two hits out of the five garnered by the locals. Pet.!Hutchinson HopesFor Nice WeatherDETROIT fl'Pl — Manager Freddie Hutchinson hoped today a change in the weather mightchange the fortunes of his last-place Detroit Tigers, who are riding a six-game losing streak.“We’ve had a lot of sore arms this spring,’’ Hutchinson said. “And the weather hasn't helped at all. Pitchers just don't recover in this cold, rainy weather.”Hutchinson pointed to his pitching staff as the nilmher one reason why the Tigers are floundering in theAmerican League basement. De -troit has won only two of 15 starts.“Our hitting has been all rigid,” Hutchinson said, ‘‘we’ve gotten 133 hits in the first 15 games, but that doesn’t do much good when our pitchers give up 97 runs.“We’ve had to use our rookies quite a bit because veterans like Ted Gray and Hal Newhouser are ailing. A little warm weather should help them both and then we could start a regular rotation with four of five starters.While the pitching has given Hutchinson nothing but headaches., the Tiger batters have at least given him a few opportunities to smile.
