VERSAILLES - When the South Ripley Raiders meet the Rushville Loins in the second game of the Connersville regional basketball tourney at Connersville Saturday afternoon they will carry with them the hopes and best wishes for success of all Ripley County.This marks the first time since 1970 for the high school located at Versailles to advance to the regional round of Indiana’s annual tournament to determine a state champion, which was delayed this year because of mandatory cutbacks in electric power use.If the Raiders win their first game they will meet the winner of the Aurora-Connersville game for the right to advance to the Indianapolis semi-state tourney.In 1970 South Ripley defeated North Decatur, 82-78, and that night defeated Lawrenceburg, 74-65, to advance to the Sweet Sixteen.South Ripley, smallest school in the regional field with 484 students, is a consolidation of former high schools in southern Ripley County, New Marion,Cross Plains, Holton and Versailles communities send students to the South Ripley complex.Each of the four school comprising South Ripley had sectional basketball champions. Cross Plains won its only title in 1942, and lost to Aurora in theregional.Versailles High School wonconsecutive sectional title in 1957,1958 and 1959 but lost each time in regional play, to Aurora, Vevay and Rushville.New Marion won its only title in 1961 but bowed to Connersville in the title game of the regional.Holton High School met the same fate after winning sectional title in 1962 and 1964. The Warhorses lost to Connersville in the 1962 title game and were sidelined by Brookville in an afternoon game of the 1964 regional.State champions have movedthrough the southeasternregional tourneys. Connersville won the title in 1972, moving through its own regional, while the Milan champions of 1954 swept the regional at Rushville.Stan Weber, South Ripley coach, knows about state championships since he played in two title games with theDel, Milan and South Ripley High Schools jointly announce the presentation of their 30th annual Ripley County Music Festival. The festival will be a day-long event on Friday, April7, and will conclude that evening with a concert held in the Milan High School gym at 7:30 p.m.The festival combines the bands and choruses from all four schools. They have been mutually preparing selections for the festival, and will rehearse with guest conductors on the day of the festival. These selections will be presented in the evening concert.The public is invited. Tickets will be available at the door or can be obtained through the music departments of each school.Spring MeetingBATESVILLE - The Ripley County Historical Society annual spring meeting will be held it Batesville Sunday, April 9, at 2 p.m.Raymond Grossman will be host to the members at his private museum at 300 N. Park Ave. He will be assisted by his son, Leroy Grossman.Directors for Franklin, Jackson and Johnson Townships will be elected for a three-year term. There will also be a director elected for a one-year term to fill the vacancy createdMadison Cubs, losing to Jasper in 1949 and winning in 1950.Madison’s basketball tradition also rubbed off on William “Gus” Moorhead. He played his high school baksetball at Madison, too.held at St. Louis AuditoriumDrawings for major prizes will start at 7 p.m. The auditorium will be able to accommodate the expected large crowd attending this community activity.This year the funds from the Spring Gala will go to provide an emergency communication system designed to link Margaret Mary Hospital with surrounding hospitals, doctors and emergency vehicles.Rummage SaleBATESVILLE - The New Horizon Service Guild is sponsoring a rummage sale on April 7 and 8 at the Middle School Gym in Batesville.Anyone wishing to donate to this sale may leave their items at the New Horizon Center, corner of Pearl and Mulberry Streets in Batesville. They would appreciate any donation of small, useful articles,clothing, small appliances, etc., but they cannot handle large furniture.Spring DanceMORRIS — The St. Anne’s Ladies Sodality of Morris is sponsoring a Spring Dance April 8 from 8 to 12 at Schad Hall, with “Little Rockin Country” providing the music.
