Y. i/P) After 18 years a team coached by 41-year-old Hank Iba has reached the pinnacle in basketball.W'hen Iba’s Oklahoma Aggies capped their NCAAchampionship with a 52-44 vie* tory over l)c Paul of Chicago, national Invitation tournament winners in a Ited Crons gameat Madison Square Gardenlast night, it marked the greatest triumph for the coach who is rated one of the shrewdest men in the business.The triumph was achieved before 18,158 fans who contributed more than $50,000 to the Red Cross. The gate receipts were $36,358 andthe remainder came from an $8,000 auction of the ball, program sales and radio.The game was expected to Is* a battle of basketball’s top big men the Aggies’ seven-foot Bob Kurland and De Paul’s six-foot nine-inch George Mikan. But Mi-kan fouled out after 14 minutes ofplay and Iba assigned Kurland to almost a ball-retrieving and play-making job in the last half.The Oklahoma red - head took only two shots in the last half, making one of them. lie added two free throws toboost his total to 14. Mikancounted nine points during his short appearanlt;*e.De Paul held a 21-16 point lead when Miknn departed and managed to hold its five-point margin through the remainder of the period, leaving the floor with a 26-21 advantage. But with the start ofthe second half, Cecil Hankins started rolling, showing the way as the Aggies built up a 30-26 lead in the first five minutes.The Oklahomans held commandby a narrow margin through the remainder of the game as Kurland controlled the baU off the back- i boards and then pulled away in the last five minutes when De Paul lost three more of its starters on personal fouls.
