Hays High Ties For First InClass A Meet At ManhattanWith the fabulous Ron Goates winning two events, the Hays High Indians tied for the Class A top honors with Medicine Lodge in the Kansas State Indoor Track Meet at Manhattan Saturday, Goates won the 60-yard dash and the broad jump, In winning the 60-yard dash, the Hays High speedster tied the record of 6.4 set by Dale Alexander of Hays in 1957 and Gary Sarty of Haskell in 1960,In the broad jump, Goates had a jump of 20 feet 4 inches.Another first place winner for the Indians was Richard Harrison who won the pole vault, going 12 feet 6 inches.According to Haya High's head coach Ross Thornbmgh, Harrison was the only pole vaulter to go over 12 feet.Also chalking up points for the Indians was Bob Murphy who placed third in the 880-yard run.A fall by Goates in the 440-yard run is probably what kept the Indians from taking the championship outright. Coach Thornbmgh said Goates was running- secondwhen he fell. IOVcr at the Sterling Relays on: Saturday, the remaining part ol the Hays High squad placed ninth, i Chalking up points were Phil' Heuser and Norman Leikcr who, took second and third respectively; in the pole vault.Holsington, with speedster Bill Kimble loading the way with two firsts and a second, captured the Class A division at Sterling with 40 points.• Second was Pratt and WnKeeney tying with 34 points. Russell was fourth with 32, followed by Plain-ville with 20i. Larned 15, Phillips-burg 13, Andover 10. Hays seven, Lyons six, Concordia five, Anthony 4i. Ellin wood three and Valley Center one.Three records fell in the Class A. Jerry Boxberger, Hoisington went 32-6 in the pole vault, erasing the old mark of 12-4. Kimble won the 100-yard in a record time of 9.8, erasing his old mark of 10 seconds flat set last season and another Hoisington boy, Jim Kerr, won the mile in the time of 4:44.1, breaking the old record of 4:44.30.Second to Kimble in the 100* yard dash was WaKeenoy's Kenny Rhoden. Rhoden came back and boat Kimble in the 220-yard^ dash. Cat Harris another WaKccney speedster finished third in the 100.In the mile run, McLennan of Plainville finished third. In the high jump. Clarence Gilbert of Plainville tied for first with Gary Georger of Anthony, Cal Harris placed third in the broad jump, while Tlt;»m Harris of Plainville finished fourth. Jerry Smetana of Phillipsburg won the javelin, the discus aiul came in third irt the shot put.Linn of WaKVency finished second in the 880-yard run, while teammate Haflingor took fourth.Wa Keeney also made a good showing in the low hurdles as Beardsley finished third and Dietz tdok fourth.Winning- the mile relay were the Cardinals from Plainville. Making iup the team were Floyd Harris, I Dennis Brimgardt, Steve Kerns, iand Dennis Hendren.
