Men battling for second at conference championshipsBY JOE AVENTO A-T sports editorThe UW-Oshkosh men’s track team will be battling for second place at this weekend’s Wisconsin State University Conference indoor meet at UW-La Corsse,MI don’t like to have to fight for second place,” Titan Coach Ron Akin said. “But La Crosse has strength and depth in every event. Only a total collapse would prevent them from the championship.”Akin’s squad has no indiv-dual conference champions returning from a squad that finished second last year.Jerry Turner is back from last year’s conference winning 880-yard relay team, and teamed up with Todd Resler, Cory Parker and Ken Ramirez to record the fastest time in the conference this year.The Titans’ mile relay team of Chuck Otte, Turner, Resler and Ramirez, also has the conference’s best time this season.Turner and Ramirez will also battle in the 300 and 440. Both have been among the fastest in the WSUC this season in those events.Max Harn, a three-time All-American, will be competing in the mile and the 880, while Jamie Pollard is in the mile and two-mile,Steve Mullen will run the two- and three-mile runs.Max HarnAkin said UW-Stevens Point and UW-Whitewater will fight UW-O for second place.Point is up there, and Whitewater is looking real good,” Akin said. “In fact, Whitewater is beginning to scare me a bit.“But we still think second is a realistic goal.”In their last meet before the WSUC meet, the Titans fared well, winning seven events in a quadrangular meet at Kolf Sports Center.Turner and Ramire2 finished 1-2 in the 300, with respective times of 31.9 and 32.4.“Jerry and Ken ran the fastest they’ve ever run in the 300,” Akin said. “They’re ranked first and third in the conference right now.”Ramirez also won the 440 in 50.3 and Turner was third in5 1.5.Ken RamirezJim Linstedt, last season’s conference champion in the high hurdles, and Steve Moran will compete in the hurdles for the Titans.Two-time national qualifier Steve Hable, in the pole vault, has a chance to do well, according to Akin.“Steve’s back in his old form right now,” Akin said. “He has an excellent chance of placing high in conference with a shot of winning the whole thing. The conference is loaded with good pole vaulters right now.”The 880 relay won in 1:32.7, the conference’s fastest time of the year.“They’re a full two seconds ahead of the second place team,” Akin said.
