Sportangles■By Fred Mendell• \S-:*-Once again team* of the west, midwest and south have dominated the NJCAA basketball tournament, but that’s not to the discredit of the eastern brand of basketball.It is improving, and fast.The main difference now is that junior colleges are new and comparatively few in the east, whereas they’re established, plentiful,and getting bigger by the year in other sections of the country.After first round play in the tourney only one team remained from east of the Mississippi,that being Northeast Mississippi of Booneville, which admits to being more south than east, anyway. One covered the New England area where enough four year colleges were established years and years ago to iiscourage intrusion of tho jun-tested Tyler’s selection, albeit Hinds had won from Tyler.No selection was possible without causing some unhappiness. What more logical choice, though, than a defending champion withan mitotan dinerball. Uplinger slipped under for a final goal as the gun sounded end-ing the game and the tournament.Huge gold trophies were presented the coaches of the five top teams. Special awards also went to individual players on the Cub and Tiger crews which met in the championship game. The previous low in points production was that of Jacksonville against Dodge City in the consolation bracket finals, Dodge City winning 57-43,The Broncbusters set the defensive pattern at the start. After ten minutes of play the score was 13-all. Five minutes later it was 18-all. Weber took the lead at 19-18, but Keller dunked * post shot tolors.The Delaware • Pennsylvania-Maryland area also was not represented this year but had entries in two previous meets. York, Pa., was set to come this year but lost in its regional. Keystone, Pa.f was not expecting to come—and won. Then it was too late to make arrangements.New regional territories are being established with the primary purpose of having one representative from each—every year. But in the east, it may be necessary to block many states in one region to assure good competition and regional interest.NJCAA officials had hands full“trouble shooting” during business sessions here. The answer to many of those troubles is “rules”. Regulations are on their way, possibly in volume.Officials said they never hadintended the home region to havemore than one “invited team.” Tofill out the bracket from oneregional would obviously be unfair. Every runner-up team in any region had as much right to a spot in the tourney as Hinds college, Raymond, Miss., which pro-The NJCAA also learned it had some ‘pretty serious problems in player eligibility. One school brought a high school player. He went to school in the same building but was not enrolled for a college class. No unfairness was intended—but players must be regularly enrolled and passing in 10 college hours. The two or three year student bugaboo came up regarding a student at still another school.Rules, amendments, clarifications are coming.The finals here matched here a team from a school having 14,-000 students with a school having 862, Los Angeles City College with Northeast Miss.But some of the Los Angeles boys frankly admitted they envied the teams from smaller schools. “About 25 persons were at the train to see us off for the national meet,” one player said, “I have to admit the ’school spirit’ back home doesn’t compare with that hereabouts.
