Bill Gay, Sam Williams, Mike Truell and Dick Gibbs, (Journal sportsphoto)Safiey's on Point Spreesfavorites Take Hayes CrownBy HAROLD BLAKE Sports EditorPre-tourney favorite Safiey’s Sports Shop All-Stars of Muscatine lived up to its rating with two easy wins Sunday in becoming the champ of the 12th annual Hayes Amateur Basketball tourney.The offensive-minded Safiey’s outfit blasted Doonan’s Cattle Buyers of Illinois, 111-87. in the . finals after beating Ina Mae's of Muscatine, 94-88, in the semi-finals.Safiey's, featuring Burlington JC players and Iowa star Sam Williams, averaged a shade • over 95 points in its four tourney tilts.A look at what happened in 'Sunday's games attended by capacity crowds at the Hayes gym:Safiey's -Doonan'sDoonan's stayed close for a quarter and a half before Safiey’s went on an offensive spree in its 111-poinl outbursts in the championship game.■ Safiey’s led just 38-36 midway through the second period and up six at halftime, 4640.The champs also were up just 48-40 at halftime, but outscored their foes 22-6 to open the third quarter for a 68-46 margin.
