Tiny Hebron Still Tingling After CelebrationWild WelcomeGiven ChampsUpon Return5,000 ‘Neighbors’ Invade Village to Hail HomecomingNHpoisIB^ !H lU lt;G- IH 1H lt;D IU lt;IHBy CHARLES DUNKLEV HERRON — (AP) — This tiny McHenry county village was back in control of its 652 citizens today after being be* seiged by an estimated 5,000 '‘neighbors” who yesterday climaxed the most frenzied homecoming jamboree in state history. There was every Indication, that all cows of Hebron would be milked as the townspeople gradually settled back to normalcy with a warm proudr.ess that seldom comes to a whistle-stop.Hebron high’s basketball tepm was home with the state championship. an accomplishment un*duplicated by such a small school (97 enrollment, 43 boys) in 45 years of the meet.Takes Six Hours The 190-mile trip from Champaign to Hebron yesterday took more than six hours, but the milling crowds of 5,000 that engulfed the hamlet from surrounding communities stayed joyfully through sub-freezing wind and snow to welcome the champs. All along the route, cities opened their arms and hearts to Hebron’s team proudly headed by Little Napoleon”—-the name given the diminutive, balding 39-year-old coach, Russ Aheam,State highway patrots convoyed the caravan in the return parade from Champaign and continually relayed by radio its progress to Hebron. The entourage started out with about 50 autos but had swollen to 700 before joining the stream of waiting cars that jammed highways ir. a three-mile radius around Hebron.Friends Join Parade Like a tidal wave, the caravan picked up newcomers at such cities in its path as Morris, where several thousand turned out; Elgin, Dundee, Algonquin, Wood-stock and on in.Fire engines wailed the approach of the conquerors at each juncture. It was as if all of Northern Illinois wanted to lay claim to Hebron's Green Giants as theirWhat more Is there to be said about Hebron’s basketball team that hasn't already been pounded out by 40 other typewriters/OTHERS HAVE SAID that Hebron wac great in the clutch, that Ahearn was the shrewdest coach in the tournament, that the best team won. All of these reports are correct. These points were the salient ones in this tournament, probably the most interesting meet to watch in the past decade. But before closing shop on the 1952 tourney, we would like to stress another related Idea about the winners: Hebron’s championship was no fluke,THE GREEN GIANTS weren't particularly impressive in their first two games, but they didn’t have to be to win. That was perhaps Ahearn’s greatest contribution to the success of the team during the tourney. After Friday's game against LawrenceviIlf, Abeam said,“We’re pacing ourselves.”HE KNEW THAT Hebron didn’t have the bench strength to play at full tilt through four games in three days. So his boys coasted through those, first two games against Champaign and Lawrenceville. When the chips were down against Rock Island and Quincy in Saturday’s games, Hebron had the energy to deliver its top basketball.Hebron got the biggest break in the original pairings for Sweet Sixteen play and made the most of this break. While the Giants were breezing past Champaign and Lawrence ville, two second-rate teams, Quincy was looking at Freeport and Taylorvillc, two of the meet’s best.BOTH HEBRON AND QUINCY had tough opponents Saturday afternoon. Both Rock Island Mt. Vernon pushed the finalists all the way before yielding.JUDSON TWINS ON STAR TEAMCHAMPAIGN — (AP) — The Judson twins, Paul and Phi!, represented Hebron’s title winners on the Associated Press all-tourna-ment team in the Illinois prep basketball finals.Bruec Brothers, Quincy's brilliant center, was the only player to get unanimous backing from I ho 43 sports writers and broadcasters voting in the poll. Brothers also was a member of the all-star first team last year.own.It could only happen—in such a fairy-tale way—to such a smallsehoo* that registered 35 wins against one defeat for the season and vividly captured the fancy of the whole state,Hebron was on the map in a big way.And when the team finally arrived at Hebron—almost deserted since Thursday when 500 citizens took off for the tournament—the cheers, auto horns, fire sirens,-and bell ringing by the 5,000 fans made the most deafening noise ever heard on the McHenry county countryside.Spooner Greets Throng The official greeter was Mayor Mark Spooner, grandfather of Ken Spooner, one of the players. He didn’t offer a key to the town—* Hebron’s cage team didn’t need it.Under a long hand-painted streamer across the intersection of stat'- highways No. 173 and 47 —the core of Hebron’s downtown —that read hail the state champs, the team faced the crowds. The public address system had broken and Aheam, his assistant, Phil Hadley, and the players had to shout their thanks from atop an auto. This is the realization of adream started four years ago,” saidthe over-joyed coach. I can’t believe it yet. It’s simply a very great thing to have all these people here to greet us. We are very proud.”One of the happiest citizens in the village was Mrs. Marie Aheam, wife of the coach.Of course I am thrilled and happy that we won,” she said. “But I am also happy to get my husband back. He’s been missing, it seems, since the basketball season first started.”Because the 1952 tournament was outstanding (as Saturday's televiewers will agree) once again the need for better seating accommodations Is being discussed.THE STATE TOURNAMENT is just too good a show to be restricted to 6,905 customers at each session. It doesn’t make sense that Joe Fan should support his high school team through a ruggeci 20-game schedule during the season, then be shut out completely when the World Series tickets are being passed out.Plans for a new “sports palace” in Champaign are in the Incubation stage. Officials of the Illinois High School association remain steadfast in their refusal to move the tourney to other cities where stadia are available—say Peoria or Chicago. So II seems that one of the great sports crimes of our time wiU continue indefinitely.m * *SATURDAY’S TOURNEY play in Illinois and Iowa left littleargument as to which state plays the best basketball. A1 Willis, executive secretary of the Illinois High School association, said the outcome gives heart to all the small schools who annually take part in the tournaments.Villa Grove, which won in 1923, had 106 pupils compared withHebron’s 96.Top scorer of the four-day finals was Bruce Brothers, Quincy’s star six foot, five inch centc1*, who collected 91 points.Brothers was the key to the Quincy offense with his amazingly accurate jump-up shots, and his loss on fouls early in the fourth quarter of the title contest* hurt Quincy’s chances.Show' Plenty of PoiseThe Hebron, players showed the poise of champions by refusing to get rattled In the tense moments. His squad, copped the National Collegiate Athletic association gymnastics title for the second straight year here Saturday. It was the sixth NCAA title for Price. He won four at Illinois before going to Florida State.HankHenryLooksatSportsI was happy to see little (?)’ Hebron annex the State High School basketball championship Saturday evening and keep the title up north. Hebron seemed to use one set of tactics in its toughest games on the way to the championship and quite another type of strategy in the seemingly less rugged games. In beating Elgin, Rock Island and Quincy, Hebron used its big 6-10 center. Bill Schulz, to advantage. The Champs1' worked the ball around until Schultz was open around the hoop, and then they would feed to him. A successful feed generally meant two points. In most of the other games the other four boys did the shooting and Schulz did tip-ins.Coach Ahern, did a masterful jobwith tins Hebron team in preparing it physically, mentally and mechanically for the acme to which it attained Saturday night. He arranged a tough schedule and it paid off, for Hebron played its best when the pressure was on— a mark of a well-poised team.Say, have you seen the new CLUB CHECK SUITS for spring? Neat checks, single breasted coat, patch pocket, long, narrow lapels, less padding in the shoulders— these are the marks of the well-tailored suit for 1952.
