ncaa roundupWebbNCBy BRAD SMITHDENVER (UPI) - Little Spud Webb scored 14 points and broke through Alabama’s stiff defense Friday night, leading North Carolina State into the final of the NCAA West Regional with a 61-55 victory over the Crimson Tide.The 5-foot-7 Webb, darting in and around Alabama's hefty front line, scored nine points in the first half. Teammate Lorenzo Charles equaled the output, most from the inside.The victory put the Wolfpack into Sunday’s West Regional final against the winner of Friday night's other semifinal between St. John’s and Kentucky.Terry Conner led Alabama with 18 points and Buck Johnson had 16. Bobby Lee Hurt was held to nine points, less than his 12.7-point average and well below what Crimson Tde coach Wimp Sanderson hadhoped for from his 6-9 senior center.The Wolfpack held a 28-27 edge at the half. Alabama led 45-41 with nine minutes left, but the Tide’s inexperienced guards made several crucial mistakes that led to North Carolina State’s surge.Jim Farmer and Mark Gottfried,both sophomores, missed jumpers inside, and Farmer lost the ball when he couldn’t handle a pass under the basket with 33 seconds left.Cozell McQueen, who kept Hurt from being a factor for Alabama, fouled out with 7:30 left, but Hurt was unable to take advantage of hisabsence.Conner scored nine of his 18 points in the second half.The lead changed hands nine times in the first half, with the largest leada 23-19 edge for the Wolfpack with 5:02 left. N.C. State took the lead for the final 7:28 of the first half on a 21-foot jumper by Webb.Webb penetrated into the laneseveral times. He scored State’s final five points of the half on two inside jumpers and a foul shot. Johnson kept Alabama close in the first half with eight points, although he was held scoreless the first nine minutes.
