News Hall of Famegains new membersTORONTO (CP) - 'Roger Lemelin, president and publisher of Montreal La Presse, the late Charles Jennings, a broadcaster, and reporter Phyllis Griffiths have been elected to the Canadian News Hall of Fame.Election of the new members was announced today by the Toronto Press Club. They will be inducted in a ceremony April 8 in Toronto.The News Hall of Fame, started in 1965, provides permanent recognition to those who have made a significant contribution to the Canadian communications field.Lemelin was bom in Quebec City ami began writing novels at age 22. His first book was The Town Below and he later wrote for the CBC television series The Plouffe Family, which ran for six years in English and French.He won the Guggenheim and Rockefeller awards in 1946 and 1947, a fellowship in the Royal Society of Canada at age 30 and a medal from the Academie Goncourt in Paris in 1974.Jennings started his broadcasting career in 1928 with CKGW, a Toronto station. He went on to become known as the voice of CBC radio news until his retirement shortly before his death in 1973.He joined the CBC in 1936, became supervisor of programs in 1945, was named general manager of regional broadcasting in 1959 and became vice-president in 1964.His son Peter is a news correspondent with ABC television in the U.S. and hisdaughter Sarah is a free-lance broadcaster.Phyllis Griffiths joined the now-defunct Toronto Telegram in 1921.In 1928, she began a sports column, The Girl and The Game, which ran for 15 years.
