■V*V¥*♦FanFare★★★A SURPRISE among the candidates for West Virginia University’s football team is none other than Scott MacDonald, the basketball player.Don't laugh, though. The 6-6, 210-pound senior from Two Harbors, Minn., knows what the grid game is all about. He should. He played three different positions in as many years on his high school football team. He must have excelled, too.Bob Devaney, the gridmaster at Nebraska, thought enough of MacDonald’s football skills to offer him a scholarship. But the all-around athlete turned it down in favor of basketball.MacDonald was a quarterback as a sophomore, a running back as a junior and a linebacker as a senior. In joining the West Virginia football squad for spring practice, he hopes to earn a berth as a tight end. He would have one year of eligibility in that sport.WVU has two lettermen available at tight end from last year’s team. They are John Coker. 6-1, 215-pound senior, and Randy Swin-son, 6-3, 210-pound junior.MacDonald wouldn’t be the first to make the transition frombasketball to football at the University. Wayne Porter did it successfully in 1968, earning starter status as a wide receiver. There was a difference, though. Whereas MacDonald has not played football in four years, Porter had been away from the sport only two years. The switch had to be easier for Porter.MacDonald also was bothered by a leg injury during his seniorseason of basketball. Any recurrence would hamper his chances ofmaking the football team. He’s a great competitor, though, and can’t be counted out before he has a fair trial. Apparently he's going to get the opportunity to prove himself.WjIT’S ASSUMED that Jim Youngblood has resigned as an assistant football coach at WVU. though no announcement has been made. His name doesn't appear on the staff listing in the official spring prospectus. And he couldn't be contacted yesterday for comment. The University has a policy of not announcing resignations. It’s up to the individual involved, we re told.Youngblood has been a member of Bobby Bowden’s staff the past two years. Before being hired on a full-time basis, he served two years as a graduate assistant.Assistants Joe Pendry and Alex Gibbs resigned earlier this year to accept other positions at Kansas State and Ohio State, respectively.Bowden brought in Mike Wotring, Paul Moran and GregWilliams as replacements. All have impressive credentials forprevious experience in major-college coaching. The new coaches will be learning as well as teaching in springdrills which got under way last Friday.* * * 'TWO VETERANS will miss WVU spring football practicebecause of physical problems. They’re Dave Van Halanger, 6-6, 265-pound senior offensive tackle, and Tom Florence, 6-0, 190-pound senior defensive back.Van Halanger has a knee ailment which necessitates furtherrest. Florence is recuperating from recent knee surgery. An All-East selection last season, Van Halanger will anchorWVU’s offensive line which showed tremendous improvement lastyear. He’ll be a third-year starter.Florence, who lettered in 1973, saw only limited action last season. But he could be a contender for a regular job in 1975 following the graduation of Marcus Mauney and Charlie Miller.Missing spring workouts won’t help his bid. He’ll just have to work that much harder in the fall.A STRONGBOY among West Virginia’s 30 football recruits isSteve Riley of Greenville, Pa.The 6-2. 220-pound middle guard recently became the high school heavyweight wrestling champion of Pennsylvania. That didn’t surprise WVU coaches, though. Riley had capturedthe 185-pound title in his junior year.“It’s a tremendous honor for Steve,” Chuck Klausing, WVU’sassistant head coach, points out, “because Pennsylvania puts greatemphasis on wrestling.”Riley isn’t the biggest of the Mountaineer recruits, though. Another Pennsylvanian, Jeff Cortileso. claims that distinction. He’s 6-5 and tips the scales at 245.Cortileso is listed as an offensive tackle. Anotherheavyweight, 6-5, 237-pound Norm Patterson of Brownsville, is adefensive tackle.AliISthekingWarwoodvictim inAA finalePicture Page 3-CCHARLESTON, W Va. lt;UPI) -Sparked by center Anthony Harris' 35 points, Northforks undefeated and top-ranked Blue Demons stormed to their second straight West Virginia Class AA high school basketball championship Saturday bv outs-coring Warwood 97-83.Northfork Coach Jennings Boyd, whose nine-year record now stands at 83.4 per cent wins, said he thinks his team is deserving of its No. 1 rating among all high schools in thestate—including Class AAA“This team is the best I’ve everhad,” said Boyd, who coached his first undefeated team.“I think that Northfork this year and last year could compete in any class in West Virginia,” he added. “I've been there nine years and we've improved the schedule eachyear.“We are anything by competitionlt;not trying to prove this, but we like thebecause a tougherschedule makes us play better basketball,” he said.“I did not say we could beat any team in West Virginia, please, I said we could compete with any class in , West Virginia,' he said.Northfork had a period of concern against a scrappy Warwood team in the second quarter when its three front court starters all drew threepersonal fouls on them.“Yes, I got concerned,’ Boyd said. “We had a lot to be concerned about. But our subs still gave us a seven-point lead (46-391 at halftime.”The Demons, racing to their third championship in five years, never trailed.
