CLASS A ANorthfork Blue Demons Refuse to Be Cast OutBy Bob FretwellThere was no exorcism of the Demons of Class AAbasketball.Northfork’s Blue Demons capped a perfect.26-0 season Saturday afternoon by defeating scrappy War wood, 97-83. in the Class A A climax of the 62nd State High School Basketball Tournament at the Civic Center. In the process, they may have cast out a “devil” from the life of coach Boyd Jennings, who vowed at midseason to give up a 2^-pack-a-day smoking habit if the Blue Demons continued undefeated for the first time in their rich and rewarding basketball history.Northfork's 6-foot-4 string-bean inside scorer, Anthony Harris, who led his team on a Class AA championship game record spree and to a second consecutive basketball title, celebrated by ripping to shreds unopened packs of cigarettes in the dressing room.Boyd s 12-year-old son, Mark, joined in the destruction. ’“We travel by car,” Boyd said. “About midway through the season, Mike and the players were bugging me so much,I made a promise to quit. Til try to live up to it.”* * *NORTHFORK CAME outsmoking to keep its end of the pact. The Blue Demons wrappedtheir point-producing defense around the outmanned Vikings and sprang into a 30-16 lead before the expiration of the first quarter.Mark Delbrugge, the hero of Warwood’s semi-final comeback triumph over HuntingtonSee pictures of Northfork-Warwood game on Page 5D.Vinson, and Craig Reidel revived the Vikings in the second quarter and Randy Beihl’s driving layup to open the last half sliced the deficit to 46-41.Harris took over almost complete control of the boards to pull Northfork out of danger. He made 14 of 17 field goal attempts in a 35-pointoutburst.Graceful Wayne Carrington and hot-shooting Scottie Todd were Northfork's other major scorers on a team that shot 52.7 per cent. Todd collected 20 points and Wayne Carrington 17. Eugene Carrington, the other of four starting seniors on a team regarded in some quarters as the best in the state this season, contributed nine assists.Northfork's production of 97 points topped the previous Class AA high of 95 scored by the great Oceana team of 1965. A late burst gave the Vikings the consolation of scoring the most points of a losing team in the Class AA finals.Northfork dictated the pace of the game to end Warwood’s season under coach Jim Fotiat 20-6.Reidel. driving with determination and hitting from outside, scored 27 points.“Northfork this year and last year could compete with any team in the state,” Boyd said, refraining from calling his Blue Demons the state’s best of any class. He was satisfied with the assessment that “this team is the best I’ve had.”“We certainly played — and played well against —. one of the best teams in the state.” Foti said. “Northfork is super fast in addition to everything else.”Northfork joined Charleston and Ceredo-Kenova on the list of consecutive two-time champions since the state tournament was whacked into three classes. This was the Demons' third title in a five-year span.NORTHFORK (97)Player...............GliE. Carrington.....2-4W.
