Ted Hairfield Pole Winner For Race Toda vSOUTH BOSTON (AP) — Ted!Ifairfield of Richmond drove his''bright blue 1964 Chevelle at arecord speed Saturday to winthe pole position for Sunday’s300 - lap national championship I late model Sportsman race at; South Boston Speedway. jHairficld, forced to borrow an axle after breaking one earlier in practice, toured the three-eighths mile oval in 15.75 seconds, a speed of 85.714 m.p.h, in breaking the track record of 84.532 he set last summer.Runt Harris, also of Richmond, won the outside pole in another ’64 Chevelle with a bcst-lap time of 15.82 seconds.The $6,000, 112-mile race starts at 2 p.m. Sunday.Other qualifiers Saturday included Ray Hendrick of Richmond and Tom Colclla of Pittsburgh in 1964 Chevclles; Sonny Hutchins of Richmond in a ’63 Fairlane; Tommy New of Tucker, Ga., in a ’G5 Dodge; and Jack Shaw of Martinsville iu a ’56 Chevrolet. In all, there were 19 qualifiers.
