NO REPRESENTATION IN MEMORIAL CUP?Saskatchewan juniors cant (j|| CAHA datesREGINA (CP) — Frank Germany president of the Saskatchewan Amateur Hockey Association, Monday night sent a telegram to the Canadian Amateur Hockey Association expressing his regret that Saskatchewan would not be represented in the Memorial Cup playoffs this year.Germann said in the telegram that the Saskatchewan junior hockey league champions could not be decided by March 27, the date set down by the CAHA, and therefore the league would he unable to send a representative against the junior champions from British Columbia.Germann said he received a telegram from the CAHA saying “the SJHL is required to field a team in New Westminster March 27, or in Kelowna March 28 as per the agreement made at the CAHA meeting Jan. 24-25 in Winnipeg.”Germann said after talking to SJHL Com mis s i o n e r Frank Boucher, he had no choice but to inform the CAHA that Saskatchewan would be unable to meet its commitment, and therefore would not compete in the Memorial Cup playoffs.In an interview Monday, Boucher said the SJHL finals would open in Weyburn Wednesday night. League champion ReginaPats meet Weyburn Red Wings in a best-of-seven series.“In view of this, we will not be able to complete our final series by the stated date, and it’s up to the CAHA whether they'll pass us by,” Boucher said. iThe commissioner said the SJHL knew last June that this situation might take place, then was informed of the playoff date fol 1 o w i n g the CAHA’s Winnipeg meeting.“However, we could not afford to cut down our playoff schedule in order to meet the CAHA dates because playoff games mean money for the league. They are our bestsource of income. Therefore I decided we would play out our league finals and leave the decision to the CAHA,” Boucher I said.With the telegram to Germann from CAHA Vice-President Fred Page of Fort William. it appeared the CAHA had made its decision.The ( AHA decided at its January meeting the winners of the SJHL would meet the B.C. champions in a quarter-final series. The winner of that would play the Alberta champion for the right to meet the winner of the Manitoba - Thunder Bay se-1 ries in the western Canada final.Boucher said the SJHL. askedfor an extension of the originalMarch 19 deadline, and weregranted eight days to March 28— if that coincided with theB.C. playoffs.However, Boucher said he had informed the CAHA the SJHL would need more than eightdays.In Port Arthur, Fred Page, CAHA vice-president in charge of western Memorial Cup playoffs, said there definitely will be no extension of dates.Page said the dates were arrived at after long deliberations during the CAHA semi-annualmeeting in Winnipeg Jan. 24-25 and agreed to by all branches concerned. “The other branches are co-operating.”He said if Saskatchewan had approached the CAHA in “January or February” an alternate arrangement could have been made but at this late date a change was out of the question.Page said the first he had heard of the SJHL being unable to meet playoff commitments was Thursday.He said if Saskatchewan is unable to send a representative the CAHA would attempt to set up a playoff between Alberta and B.C.II
