March 22-23, 1974 Charles “Pete” Conrad Jr., who logged more than 21 million miles in space as an American astronaut, visited Parsons the previous day. Conrad was touring facilities owned by American Television Communications Corp. of Denver, owner of Cablevision of Parsons. He retired as an astronaut in January and became a vice president and chief operating officer of the firm. A new general manager and production manager were appointed at Grandview Products Co. of Parsons to keep pace with increased production and expanding markets, Mrs. Emil Zetmeir, vice presi dent, said. E.F. “Sonny” Zetmeir, a son of Mr. and Mrs. Emil Zetmeir who had been associated with the business for nine years, was named general manager. James Ulery, formerly employed by Triangle Pacif ic Corp. in Auburn, Neb., joined Grandview as production manager. E.F. Zetmeir formerly was plant foreman and superintendent and also Grandview’s first “fly-in” salesman in Oklahoma and Kansas. Paul and Boni Kennedy bought Munding’s Clothing, St. Paul, from Paul Munding. The store was founded with a line of general merchandise in 1868 by the Koenig family and remained under Koe nig ownership and operation until Munding bought it in 1953. March 22-23, 1984 Seniors Brian Horton, Kevin Horton and Joe McDaniel returned to lead a cast of six lettermen and three newcomers on the Parsons High School tennis team. Brian Horton was the defending two-time Southeast Kansas League and regional singles champion. Kevin Horton and McDaniel made two state tourney trips in doubles, as had Brian Horton in singles. Junior Doug Harris was the fourth re turning state qualifier. Senior Darren Pradit and junior Suresh Jothi rounded out the list of letter winners. The newcomers were Junior Scott Reimer, sophomore Mark Long and freshman Craig VanWey. Lori Myers was one of three Labette Lady Cardinals named to the first Kansas Independence Community College women’s all star basketball team. The 5-foot-9 sophomore, named earlier to the All-Region 6 second team, starred in high school at Labette Coun ty. She was the all-time scoring leader for the LCC women’s team. Labette’s Carla Tierney, Pittsburg, and Karla VanLeeuwen, St. Paul, were named to the five-member second team. March 22-23, 1994 The Parsons City Commission approved a final grant application for construction of a manufacturing building for Luscombe Aircraft Corp. The total project cost of the airplane manufacturing building at the Parsons Tri-City Airport was estimated at $4.5 million. That was for a 60,000-square-foot building scheduled for the second phase of the company’s plan, which was to be completed by February 1995. Parsons City Manager Jim Richardson’s annual salary was in creased from $52,407 to $54,517 by the Parsons City Commission. The raise was effective March 1, the six-month anniversary of the start of Richardson’s employment. The salary of the previous city manager, Dick Combs, was $46,344 when he retired.
