Friday, March 21. 1980Outstanding Athletes To Be HonoredBy HallFameEleven seniors will be honored as the outstanding athletes of their high schools at the eighth annual Armstrong County Sports Mall of Fame banquet, which will be conducted at 6:30 p.m. April 19 at the White Star Club in Freeport.They are Kvu Hwan Lee of. Worthington for soccer; Eric Walker of Elderton for wrestling, Dan Kelly of East Brady for football; Mike Formaini of Shannock Valley for football;Joe Gourley of Apollo-Ridgefor football; Dino Aimino of Freeport for basketball; JoanMinarcin of Ford City for basketball; Bill Kunst of Kittanning for football; Dan Mauser of Leechburg for football; and Scott Bussard of Dayton for basketball.Additionally, Carl Stimac of East Brady, who suffered a crippling injury during a game in 1978. will receive a special award for football.The seniors were selected by the athletic staffs and coaching departments of the respective schools.Tne hall of fame will also make its first special sports service award The recipientwill be Don Martin ofFreeport.Martin is the owner and promoter of the Lernerville Speedway, a three-eighths of amile clay track located six miles north of Freeport on Route 356.Martin opened the track, at one-fourth of a mile, in mid-1967. The first race, a 100-lap invitational, was run on the track in the fall of that year.The first full season for sprints, late models and coupes came in 1968. At the time, all the drivers werefrom outside the area, but as more drivers began racing at the track, it was expanded to one-third of a mile in 1970.In 1971, the track became the first in the country to run four classes of cars when the semi-lates division was added on July 2. Martin also eliminated time trials.That same year, Martin expanded the track to three-eighths of a mile He alsoremoved the outside guardrail, which allowed more racing room.Martin added the claimer division in 1974 and eliminatedthe intermission Last year, Martin added bleachers, widened three turns, built a new kitchen facility, modernized the concession stand, built a press box and cleared more land for parking At a Las Vegas meeting last winter he was honored as the Outstanding Short Track Promoter of the year In February, at Daytona Beach, he was named one of the topten promoters in the country.Guest speaker for the evening will be Westinghouse football coach Pete Dimperio.Dimperio’s teams won 17 city championships and and 121 of 126 league games over a 21-year period. He also had a 28-game winning streak In 12 years as basketball coach at Herron Hill Junior High School, he compiled a 187-8 record A total of 236 of his players have received college athletic scholarships Among the awards he’s receivea are the Dapper Dan Award; the Man of the Year in Sports in Pittsburgh; the B nai B’nth Service Award; and the Prep Coach of the Year Award, which is given byPrep National Magazine.
