Canada has participated in the world and Olympic championships for 33 years, a record that cannot be approached by any other country. It's about time they paid some attention to us.”Two years ago in Tampere, Finland, the CAHA made a strong and eloquent plea for the 1967 tournament since it was Canada's centennial year, Switzerland and Austria also applied. The voting was close, but when hands were counted the competition was awarded to Vienna, much to the surprise of the Viennese delegation who really did notcampaign too hard. Now, the CAHA would like to host the tournament in 1969 or 1970. Czechoslovakia and Denmark have also applied for 1969 and the word is that it's in the bag for the Czechs. The decision is expected Friday. The Canadian delegation here would not be too upset over such a verdict providing they can receive assurance that Canada can be certain of staging the1970 tournament. However, it has become known that Sweden and Switzerland are also in the race for 1970. As the Europeans have an unfortunate habit of sticking together and plajyng politics to the hilt, Canada’s chances may not be bright under the circumstances.Until recently, it would have been impossible for Canada to stage the tournament because the project would have been too costly. But since the IIHF decided it would be possible for the unprofitable B andC Pool matches to be played in another locale, the , door was opened to the CAHA.Thus, arrangements have been made with the U.S. Amateur Hockey Association that if Canada receives The 1970 tournament, the U;S. will.take the B and C events. Matches would be played at Colorado Springs, home of Thayer Tutt, USAHA president. The Americans would receive some financial aid from the CAHA.Under the circumstances, the IIHF ready does not have a legitimate excuse not to give the world championship competition to Canada. And that is why the CAHA, if it does not receive the treatment it considers its just due, is ready to tell the IIHF what it can do with its tournament — one where Canada is the biggest attraction. -Meantime, a delegation headed by Percy Downton and Harold Marlin hopes to arrange a tournament in Winnipeg in 1968 similar to this past January's successful centennial event. Sweden, which did not compete this year, is anxious to participate.and Czechoslovakia, Russia and the U.S. are also interested.A similar tournament would also be held in Europe. Both would take place before the Olympic Games in Grenoble, France, due to open on Feb. 2.
