The Southtown quintet j advanced to the second round in' the tourney when it scored a 58-to-, 47 victory over the Hartford: (Conn.) Nutmegs Monday night in the meet’s opening contest.Although the Gears were able to pile up a sizeable victory margin., they were forced to the wall in the! early stages of the contest. The) Hartford machine, which inciden-; tally produced the game’s high I scorer, held a 22-to-2l lead at the halftime.Rally in Second Half.After the second half opened the Gears began to put on steam. They roiled up a small lead and then staved off the bidding invading five throughout the balance of the contest. The Gears had a big dose of trouble in stopping John Wright from hitting the bell. Wright, a Hartford forward, tallied 22 points for scoring honors.Stan Patrick, a South side boy who lives at 7145 Rockwell st., paced the victors although he was in lured slightly in the second half and had to retire from the contest early. Patrick suffered a cut lip and retired from the game with six field goals and three free throws for 15 points to his credit.
