THE CALUMET AND HECLA MINESTILL ON FIRE.Ten Thousand Dollars’ Reward.The Calumet anti Hecla mining company continue to offer £2000 for word which shall lead to the conviction of those who fired this mine, for the third time, Nov29th. 1888.After Three Months’ Burning,nothing was known as having occurred during the week ending March 1st, with respect to the fire underground likely to give much encouragement to either the management, the shareholders, or the miners The shafts were still all closed, and the gas from No. 3 was being conveyed down the No. 4 shaft. It does not look as if there is any fear of the mine being opened too soon.Drilling Holes To Pour Down Water,Two hoiea have been drilled near the blacksmith’sshop, through which water is being lot in*o the workings. The small drill has been moved to a spot about 80 feet south and 100 west of No 2 shaft, and a hole is being drilled, whieh will reach the workirgs between the 1st and 2nd levels. The drill in the base-ball ground is down about 450 feet; it is expected to reach the workings between the 9th and 10th levels, and will therefore have to be suak about 125 feet more.What Blew uf the Blacksmiths’ Bellows.An explosion occurred in the shed surrounding this drill on the morning of the last day in February but which did no damage further than bursting the bellowsand sending a dinner-pail across the shed, nearly knocking the engineer out of time. The engineer has been in the habit of sinking oil and gas wells, but here thought be must have bored into Sheol itself.The explosion was caused by some wet coal having beeD, when the fire was started, placed on the mouth of toe bellows, the gas from which instead of escaping got into the bellows, and which exploded when the man commenced to blow. It is fortunate the man escaped injury.Further Remedies.The water by means of the skips aod pumps In No.5 shaft Is being kept from rising. Several cars of stamp sand were brought from the mills, and a gang of men are busy mixing the same with soil, which, by meao9 of water, is being run down the hole lately drilled between the No. 2 and man engine shafts.
