By LARKY LOCKIIARTSports F.ditorUnderclassmen play important roles in the All-Tribuneland girls’ basketball teams selected for the 1973-74 season.Of the eight girls named to the first team, four are underclassmen. Two sophomores- Maxwell's high-scoring Karla Thompson and Hubbard guard Mary Lynn Hueser—are on the firstteam. Juniors on the first team are South Hamilton forward Jody Busingand Roland-Story guard JackiMichaelson.The first-team seniors includeforwards Kris McCartney of Radcliffeand Joy Krueger of Hubbard and guards Sue Pepper of Gilbert and Diane Finch of Ballard.Only two juniors and one sophomore could break into the second team. The juniors are Nevada guard Diane l.udeman and South Hamilton guard Sandy March. Boone forward Sue Beckwith is the second team's onlysophomore.They join senior forwards Margaret Lundy of Nesco, Kathy Hennessy of Roland-Story and Lynda Johnson of Boone and senior guards Cheryl Rickerl of Gilbert and Ronda Bennett of Boone on the first team The four first-team forwards combined to score more than 3,000 points this season, and their combined average was better than 35.5 points per game. Thompson was the leading scorer in Tribuneland with a 44.1-point average. Although she has completed just two seasons of varsity competition, Thompson already has 1,632 career points. Her 73-point game this year set a school record, and she hit 52 per cent of her field goal attempts and 71.8 per cent of her free throw tries. She scored 969 points this season.Good Driver “Karla is a competitor,” Maxwell coach Bruce Rasmussen said of his scoring ace. “She's a good driver and a good outside shooter She’ll get her shots. She was averaging 49 points per game and the Cardinalettes were 7-4 when she suffered the injury. Her average plunged, along with the team’s record, once she lost the mobility to move easily outside.Holds Four RecordsMcCartney holds four Radcliffe school records: most points in a game lt;64); most points in a season (752 her sophomore year); highest season scoring average lt;37.4 as a sophomore), and most career points (1,927).Kris was all-conference three years in a row,” Radcliffe coach Lou Luiken said “She played guard as a freshman. She missed two games with the injury and was never herself after she came back.”The four first-team guards averaged 8.4 rebounds per game and as a group accounted for some 250 interceptions. Gilbert’s Pepper was the rebound leader, averaging just over 10 per game (with 216 in 20 games). She hrd 59 interceptions and was a two-year all-conference selection. Her career totals are 673 rebounds and 220 interceptions.prominer“Sue is what held us together,” (filbert coach Dwayne Betterton said of Pepper. “She plays excellent position. She played against people from two to eight inches taller than her, and she did a pretty good job.”The interception leader was Michaelson, who had 85 in the tough Heart of Iowa Conference. She averaged 5.8 rebounds and had 11 blocked shots during the season.Jacki is an outstanding hustler,” Roland-Story coach Bill Hennessy said. “She’s quick, and she’s learning how to use her quckness. She was our leading rebounder and is a good ball-handier.”Hubbard's Hueser averaged 8.8 rebounds and had 63 steals, while Finch had a 9.0 rebound average with 36 steals.Took Top Forward“Mary Lynn usually took the top forward from the other team,” Hueser said of his daughter. She wasn’t always in position for the rebound when she went after the other team’s forward, but she did a good job of rebounding ”“Diane did a good job for us.” Ballard’s Jim Van Pelt said of Finch “She has a lot of rebounds and led the team in steals.”Leading scorer on the second team was Nesco’s Lundy, with just over 35 per game. Boone's Johnson, a three year starter, had a 27.6 average, Hennessy averaged 24.1 for Roland Story and Beckwith averaged 22 after scoring at better than 30 points a game during Boone’s tournament seriesMarsh was the leading rebounder in the Heart of Iowa Conference with 201, and added 81 interceptions. Rickerlhad 98 rebounds and 97 interceptions and was a three-year starter for Gilbert. Bennett, a first-team selection in the Mid-Iowa Conference, averaged 6.2 rebounds per game for Boone, and Ludeman had a 6.3 rebound average for Nevada.gThe Tribune sSPORTS
